How to Make a DIY Maintenance Table that Makes Fixing Up your Motorcycle Easier!

51811motomeneye.jpg How to

It was introduced in the days of old MM magazine (Moto Maintenance Magazine), which led to the commercialization of this wooden disassembly motorcycle maintenance stand. It was called the "Aozora motorcycle maintenance stand" and is known to have made motorcycle maintenance fun and attracted the attention of many Sunday mechanics. In fact, you can even make your own by using a companion that can be purchased at a home improvement store. Once you "lift and maintain" your motorcycle, everyone will appreciate it. Why not do some "Sunday carpentry" on your next holiday?

201009001mag.jpg The old MM magazine's motorcycle maintenance table is really quite simple, just a 24mm-thick laminated plywood leg stacked with a cloth and a painted companion (a concrete panel that makes a building foundation). For maintenance of a Super Cub or up to two 125cc class mopeds, a constant size companion size (roughly the size of a tatami mat) would probably be best.

The key is to put the "combination part" in the saw

CI02-1.jpgThe legs of a maintenance table cut from 24mm thick plywood (laminated plywood), which can be purchased at any major home improvement store. The legs are made by stacking them crosswise to form an "X" (X-shaped) leg. The 24mm thick plywood can easily withstand the weight of a 1000cc class motorcycle. The parts that do not affect the strength of the legs are perforated and tied together with a rope for easy hanging and storage.

CI03-1.jpgThis is an example of using a painted concrete panel (1,800 x 600 x 13mm thick), which can be purchased at any home improvement store, as the top panel. With this size, you can easily carry a moped or even a 125cc class moped. For larger motorcycles, use a sturdier and thicker top panel.

CI04-1.jpgAt the time of this photoshoot, the light and narrow road boards that are equipped with welfare motorcycles were used. A light Super Cub is quite sufficient for this motorcycle, but if you want to carry a medium to a large motorcycle, it would be better to use a wide road board that can be loaded into the trunk.

You can change the oil without "crawling" into the ground!

CI05-1.jpgA rubber plate is glued to the leg cross plywood top plate support surface to prevent the top plate from sliding, allowing the motorcycle to be maintained in a more stable condition. You can also enjoy your own "updates" by making various improvements that prioritize ease of use. A thick U-shaped plate can be screwed into the center of the top panel, which can also be used as a tire stopper. Super Cub owners had laid down aluminum striped steel plates on the main stand supports.

Bendable hinge design, but can be used on large motorcycles

CI06-1.jpgA 25mm-thick laminated wood (scrap wood from a store counter) was used for the top panel, but it was over two meters long, so it was converted to a folding type by inserting three thick iron plate hinges. This modification made it compact when carried around and easy to load into a van.

CI07-1.jpgEven a large liter-class motorcycle can be maintained in a stable condition, as you can see if the top plate is thick and solid. If you don't have a front-wheel stopper, you can make a rubber band out of a cut tire tube you no longer need and tie the grip to the brake lever to lock the front wheel.

POINT
  • Point 1 - Depending on the idea, tinkering with your motorcycle can be fun!
  • Point 2 - The workability is greatly improved when the motorcycle is on one level higher.
  • Point 3 - You can make your own motorcycle maintenance table by doing some Sunday carpentry!

It's actually the nature of Sunday mechanics to often have "back pain" from patiently squatting and fiddling with motorcycles. Regardless of your age, you need to be aware of your back pain! The motorcycle lift introduced here can not only avoid such back pain but also improve work efficiency and reduce the number of overlooked areas of discomfort. It is not, but a homemade "motorcycle maintenance table". It is a maintenance stand that you can lift up and maintain, so you can notice the parts you didn't notice.

It's a great way to kill two birds with one stone. Did you know that the motorcycle is much easier to work with when it's elevated, even if it's only 15 to 20 centimeters, than when you're on your knees or lying on the ground?

Even if you use electric, electro-hydraulic, pneumatic, or relatively inexpensive hydraulic foot-operated systems, the cost is still quite high. It is also difficult to secure enough space to keep a large maintenance table at all times.

In reality, the latter should be more of a problem. For a Sunday mechanic, it is a dream to improve the maintenance environment. The "Motorcycle Maintenance Platform" introduced here can make that dream come true, just a little bit easier. If we have a low-cost, solidly built bike maintenance stand, it will definitely improve the working environment and keep it looking neat and tidy. This is the idea behind the maintenance bench.

This was the motto for the manufacturing process, "Let's make it so you won't freak out", even with a big motorcycle on board. Therefore, thick plywood was used for the legs. According to the carpenter who was in charge of the production, they set up this kind of stand on the site and loaded it with heavy materials such as tiger boards as they worked.

Surprisingly, the stand doesn't falter even with nearly one ton of heavy materials on it. The ladders used for loading and unloading the motorcycles need to be tailored to the size of the motorcycles, but the ladders used for transportation should be sufficient. If you have a full-size moped, 17" front, and rear, you can use a standard size (1800 x 600 x 13mm thick) painted companion for the top board.

It is easy to wipe up with a rag even if engine oil is spilled on the painted top board. If you want to make it look more stylish, you can cover it with a red carpet, white sheets, or thicker laminated plywood to make it look nicer. Maintenance is fun! I want to be able to do so without getting tired.
