DIY! How to do Wrinkle Paint Especially for Motorcycle Parts!

How to

The beauty of wrinkle painting is known to engine painting such as HARLEY-DAVIDSON motorcycle!! Wrinkle painting was formerly known in the past for painting on the twin camshaft headcover on the four-wheel sports cars.

Currently, spray-type Wrinkle Paint that can be applied easily for painting is already available to purchase in the market. However, "high-temperature drying" is required for successful wrinkle painting.

This is the Wrinkle Paint sold from CARVEK. Available in red, black, yellow and blue. After painting the bright yellow color and dried, it is also possible to repaint the desired color to create an original finish.

1. A stove can be used for drying

The wrinkle painting is characterized by finishing on high-temperature drying. Wrinkle drying requires a drying time of 120 minutes at 120°C. Use the heat of the stove and finish it with a pail can.

The paint setup will remove all the old paint on the parts, exposing the metal surface. To remove the old paint, burn the old coated paint with a handy burner and brush it with a wire brush, but sandblasting is easier.

2. Not too thick, not too thin, just spray evenly

It is also important not to bother the people around you. The mosquito net was spread and the painting work is performed. On the workbench, a beer case and newspaper were prepared. After natural drying, hang the painted parts to the net and dried in a pail can.

This is the meter cover of a vintage KAWASAKI motorcycle. If all these methods will be done well, it will be such a splendid finish! The key point is not to apply thick paint in a single time, but apply it in a 3 to 4 times of coating after in a middle drying (about 15 minutes for natural drying), apply all these methods repeatedly.

This is a headcover for APE and XR of the HONDA vertical engine. By painting with the red Wrinkle Paint, it achieves an outstanding custom beauty. Wrinkle Paint is the perfect paint to bring out the originality.

3. If you fail, you will end up like this.

This is an example of carefully working too much to avoid dripping due to overpainting, resulting to a thin and uneven finish coating of the part or no shrinkage at all. Let's paint 3 to 4 times while drying in the middle of the work.

POINT

・Not too thin, not too thick, just allow time for natural drying during coating.
・When re-painting after middle drying, a wonderful finish can be achieved by re-painting from a thin part of the coat and make the thickness uniform.
・Let's finish it carefully.

There are several ways to beautifully paint the dingy engine parts. I tried the finishing headcover of the HONDA vertical engine and meter cover (made of aluminum) of the vintage KAWASAKI motorcycle with "Wrinkle Paint".

The Wrinkle Paint is finished with a thin coating is also known for its high-quality appearance and there were also many models that created the presence of a twin camshaft headcover wrinkle painting. After applying with Wrinkle Paint and allowing to air dry for about 15 minutes, it was found that when it moved to the high temperature drying step, it gradually began to shrink from around 70°C.

Here, a stove is prepared with an empty pail can instead of a kettle for boiling water. The parts were baked and dried in a pail can. Put the lid on the pail can with the normal stove fire intensity, and measure the temperature inside the pail can with an indirect thermometer, and then temperature became more than 150℃.

The lid was covered with the normal fire intensity and the coating is began to shrink, lower the fire of the stove and let it dry for about 1 hour. If there is a high-temperature dryer that can control temperature and time, it will be more convenient to work, but it is also an advantage to know that there are ways to work like this.
