Introducing the custom motorcycle that has been submitted to the Webike Community "MOTO HACK Custom Motorcycle Contest" campaign!
Meet the custom motorcycle of Tofuya Onii-san who rides GSX-R400!.
Motorcycle and self-introduction
[Self-introduction]
I have been riding motorcycles for 10 years, since I was 16 years old. Basically, I only ride on mountain passes and circuits, so I basically ride separate handlebars motorcycle. I'm a Heisei-born, Showa-raised motorcyclist who rides NSR/CBR/VFR and other motorcycles that mountain pass kids like to ride around on, and I'm currently working on my ZX-10R and looking forward to being able to ride my newly acquired toy.
[Motorcycle]
This time, the vehicle is [GSX-R400R GK73A 1989] which I have been riding only since I bought it when I was 17 years old.
It's not a fast vehicle, but the more I look at it, the more I like the styling, so I keep driving it even though I say it doesn't have great performance.
Customization of the particulars
[Directionality]
I like the styling of the stock motorcycle, so I'm trying to keep it intact and upgrade the functional parts with affordable parts that are available now. Recently, I don't dare to destroy the old motorcycle because of its unique design.
[Points that I think are cool]
This is what performance is all about. The styling was released with an unspoken catchphrase until the present stage of the Reiwa. I am proud of the fact that I have been able to create a custom design without any major changes, and I am proud to say that I have gone beyond "austere" and "charming" and have entered the realm of "smoldering silver.
The most important thing is that it is the one and only [GSX-R400R GK73A 1989] without being trendy.
Custom Points
[Front caliper]
[Custom point]
We changed the calipers in order to reduce the unsprung weight and to make the brakes easier to use while maintaining the stock look. The caliper was originally a 90mm pitch caliper from Tokico, but due to the anodizing process inside the caliper or structural problems, the caliper was frequently biting the dust, so it was changed to a Nissin Shuriken caliper. The bridge bolts were changed to titanium and the pistons were replaced with B-King aluminum pistons to lighten the load under the springs. With this customization, the pistons alone are about 300g lighter on both sides combined.

[Brake Master
[Custom point]
I have been riding with the original Nissin semi-radial master since I got the motorcycle, and I was not that dissatisfied with it, but I decided to buy the machined aluminum brake master because the price was the same as the Nissin radial.
Flanders itself has parts that are very similar to Brembo's products, and has the image of a clone, but the product itself has high cutting quality, and as a feeling of use, control is increased, and I felt the high-cost performance.
Also, when I saw the thing in front of me, I thought it was different from the Brembo master. It's not similar. If you look at it, you can see that the basic structure is Radial Master, and it looks similar, but there is a difference in the shape and the outlet, so it is better to think of it as a different brand.
My impression is that
1. Nissin works well even with less grip.
2. Brembo works better the more you grip.
3. Flanders is somewhere in between.
The brake master is determined by the piston and lever ratio, so it is not necessarily the same as the above characteristics, but it is the same as the above image.
By the way, because the size becomes φ19×20, it becomes the touch which begins to hear it by shallow gripping as the touch. (I have short fingers, so I use a 20mm lever ratio for less range of motion.)

[Rear shock]
[Custom point]
As far as I know, there are no external rear shocks for GSX-R400R 1989 GK73A. Therefore, the rear shock for [RGV250Γ] is installed though it becomes diversion. The shock body itself is almost the same, so it can be installed without any modification on the vehicle side.
Things with damping pressure adjustment and preload adjuster The spring rate can also be changed from YSS's extensive lineup, so you can find the right setting for your vehicle even if it is a diversion. The balance between damper and spring is the most important factor for shocks, and there is a tendency to think that the brand power is important, and to make fun of the reasonable brand. If you understand it correctly and set it up correctly, you will be able to ride it to some extent regardless of the brand. Damper performance varies depending on the body shape and specifications of the contents.

[Exhaust System]
[Custom point]
As for the full exhaust for GSX-R400R 1989 GK73A, there is no manufacturer that continues to sell it now.
So this time, I have installed titanium full exhaust for 1990 onwards [GSX-R400R GK76A]. The position of the engine mount is different for the GK73A and GK76A due to the new frame, but the basic design of the engine itself is the same, so the muffler can be installed on the engine without any problems.
However, since the exhaust pipe is designed to fit the under cowl of the [GK76A], it is necessary to cut off some parts and put a heat resistant sheet when installing the [GK73A]. I was able to feel the effect of the weight reduction on the motorcycle's handling and rideability, so much so that I felt like I was riding a vehicle with a smaller displacement.
The sound quality of the titanium muffler is very refreshing, and I like it so much that I always want to rev more than 12,000 rpm when driving on the circuit.
And, as you may have noticed, this muffler emblem is different from the SPEC-A that is normally sold. This time, when I ordered the product, I was forced to change it to the black SPEC-A emblem that is set separately by Yamato Racing. The color of the emblem is the same color as the vehicle, which makes the overall finish more mature and I am very satisfied.

Customization that I want to do in the future
As for the customization, I have an SP engine that was used in the Sugo Championship in the 80's, and I have OH, so I'd like to replace the engine and the TMR that I bought to match the SP engine.
I would like to aim for a real racer replica with a stock look and a crisp interior, because motorcycles are not beyond the realm of self-satisfaction.
