Elevate Your Ride: Customizing the HONDA CB1000R

Wheels continue to evolve to take advantage of tire characteristics

This 2020 CB1000R custom is painted with the Spencer color, a genuine 1982 North American CB750FC that was active in the AMA Superbike. This is a demo motorcycle that Advantage made to promote their wheel brand, EXACT.

"For our generation, CB means Spencer color, but it was difficult to apply it to the exterior of the CB1000R as is, so we worked with Morita Design, a paint shop we are familiar with, to create many prototype decals and then came up with this design. The tail area is also made with a one-off product from TK Factory," said Advantage's Nakanishi. The tail has been made compact and the tail cowl has been omitted, but the lines of the old CB-F have been incorporated without any discomfort. This is quite something.

The wheels are just as eye-catching as the exterior. They are made of forged aluminum EXACT2, which are bolted on. The single-arm rear is fitted with a 6.25-17 size tire, which is not available on the market, and is paired with Bridgestone's premium sports S23 tires.

"We recommend Bridgestone tires because we trust the brand, and the reason we used 6.25-inch rear wheels here is because the standard rim size for the S23 is 6.25, which is one size larger than the original 190/55-17 and is 200/55-17. If you use something that matches that standard size, it's easier to set up the suspension and avoid unnecessary trouble," says Nakanishi.

It was the same as when we previously combined 6.25-width EXACT wheels and 200-width Bridgestone RS11 tires on a Ninja H2 with the same single-arm rear. The tire's performance is maximized even on the wheel side. To achieve this, the wheels need to be matched to the size required by the tire. And while EXACT wheels may look the same design, they have been updated to match the rim shape and other aspects of tires, which change with the times.

The lightweight design and optimized rigidity of the wheels make cornering even more enjoyable when actually riding, so just like the Spencer style, the CB1000R should be a good reference for choosing wheels for single-sided swingarm motorcycles.

Detailed Description

The fuel tank, meter and handlebars are genuine CB1000R parts, but the whole motorcycle is "CB1000F" spec with Morita Design's Spencer colours projected all over it.

The CB1000R does not have a stock tail cowl, but TK Factory has custom-made a side integrated seat cowl reminiscent of the CB750F's ducktail and side covers. There are probably many users who want this style and think it will increase the appeal of the CB1000R.

Other than the wheels and brake discs, it is basically based on the standard 2020 CB1000R, but the clutch friction plate for the 999cc inline-four engine is a product still in development by F.C.C.

The footpegs and 4-1 + right-side exhaust silencer are also the same as the original CB1000R.

The front and rear suspension are based on the OEM, but the wheels have been replaced with Advantage aluminum forged 10-spoke EXACT2 Racing 10s. The front wheels are the same 3.50-17 size as the OEM. The tires are also Bridgestone S23s, 120/70ZR17, the same size as the OEM.

The front brake disc has been replaced with an original Advantage Direct Drive Racing Disc, which reduces distortion of the rotor by connecting the inner and outer discs with a surface rather than a point, eliminating the problems of burns and heat.

The rear brake area is genuine CB1000R. Because it is a single-arm, the wheel mount is exposed on the right side like this.

The size of the EXACT2 Racing 10 wheels on the rear is 6.25-17 inches, one size larger than the OEM, and the rear tire is a Bridgestone S23 200/55-17. The standard rim width for this tire size is 6.25, so it was selected accordingly. The drive chain is also a D.I.D 520ZVMX in gold color to match the wheel color.
