Yamaha Indonesia has announced a new model in the NMAX series, the "NMAX TURBO," which has a displacement of 155cc and is a full change from the previous "NMAX155." We were able to check out the details of this NMAX Turbo overseas, so we would like to introduce it to you right away.

The new NMAX Turbo has a thoroughly evolved exterior

The model we are introducing this time is the "NMAX TURBO Techmax." The first thing that catches your eye on the exterior is the newly designed LED headlight. The projector-type LED headlights that Yamaha has adopted in recent years are stacked vertically, giving the front view a sharp and futuristic impression. The taillights have also been completely redesigned, with elongated LED taillights that blend into the lines of the body, emphasizing a sleek and sporty appearance. While maintaining the traditional rounded design, the overall styling is injected with modern technological elements, pursuing the impression of a new generation sports scooter.

The YECVT transmission system brings a new riding experience

The new NMAX Turbo is equipped with Yamaha's latest generation Blue Core 155cc water-cooled single cylinder VVA engine, which produces 15.3 PS (8,000 rpm) and 14.2 Nm (6,500 rpm). The biggest improvement is the adoption of the "YECVT (Yamaha Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission)" system, which replaces the conventional CVT.

Unlike conventional CVTs that use pulleys to change the gear ratio, the YECVT uses a motor to precisely control the pulley, achieving more direct and linear power transmission and electronically changing the gear ratio. In fact, Yamaha released a similar YCC-AT transmission system more than 10 years ago and used it on the Majesty 250/400, but it has been a long time since it was revived.

The NMAX Turbo's YECVT has two selectable riding modes, T mode (town commute) and S mode (sports touring), to meet a variety of riding needs. The YECVT is also equipped with a Y-shift button, just like the YCC-AT, which locks the current speed and gives you a feeling of acceleration like when changing gears. The Y-shift can be adjusted to three stages, and not only does it improve the feeling of acceleration, but pressing it during deceleration applies engine braking, allowing you to shift like in a manual transmission. This direct feeling is why it is called "turbo" (although it is not actually equipped with a turbocharger).

The rear shock absorbers have been upgraded to bottle-mounted double gun shock absorbers.

It also continues to have storage space that fits a full-face helmet. The surrounding shell under the seat cushion has a carbon fiber-like pattern.

The storage space, large enough to fit a full-face helmet, continues to be included, and the surrounding shell under the seat cushion now has a carbon fibre-like pattern.

The dual-type LCD meter can be used with "Y-connect" and navigation systems.

The equipment has also been improved. A distinctive feature is the new two-tiered LCD meter, with the upper tier's high-contrast negative LCD panel displaying basic driving information such as speed, fuel level, and mileage. In addition, the large TFT screen on the lower tier is equipped with the smartphone linking function "Y-connect," which allows you to connect to your mobile phone and view and operate a wide range of applications.

The TFT monitor also provides a navigation system. This is different from the "turn-by-turn" navigation of previous Yamaha models, as it is easy to operate and displays the complete map directly. Overseas, the "Garmin" navigation system is used.

In terms of safety, the TCS (traction control) is inherited, preventing slipping in various situations. Convenience has also been improved by adding a smart key that allows keyless engine start.

From the cockpit perspective, storage space is located on the left side and the USB charging plug is laid out in the center.

When will it be introduced in Japan? Will it be released at the same time as the "NMAX125 Techmax"?

The announcement of the Japanese model has not yet been decided, but the NMAX155 is also in the lineup in Japan, and it is expected that it will be replaced by the NMAX Turbo as the NMAX series undergoes a model change. The Japanese model will also undergo a generational change along with its sibling, the NMAX125. We hope to see an announcement at the Osaka, Tokyo, and Nagoya Motorcycle Shows next spring. Domestic fans should continue to wait for further information.
