Ninja customization changes depending on your target
The original Ninja, the Kawasaki GPZ900R, is a model with a wide variety of parts and motorcycles, but as expected, the first generation was manufactured in 1984, and it was not introduced in Japan until 1990. After 30 to 35 years, the deterioration of the motorcycle condition is becoming noticeable, especially in used motorcycles. This is the latest Ninja customization by Orime-san, the president of Marvelous Engineering, a "Ninja rider" who has proposed and performed the "Ninja Dock" maintenance menu for Ninjas, focusing on such motorcycles.
"This is the first of the two motorcycles I have. I want to try out good motorcycles, and I made it with the Ninja as the base, so I could enjoy how far I could go. For example, the upper bracket of the fork is hollowed out. I wanted to compare the difference in flex with the one without the hollowed out. But that speed is not something you would experience on a public road. So I built it closer to the circuit. In terms of the details, the footpegs are tighter at the top and back on the first bike, compared to the front and bottom on the second bike (this is the other one, a normal-looking one for city riding and touring). In comparison, the first bike is finished in a way that makes it feel like a sharper Ninja. However, it is rather pinpoint-like and the speed range is high, so you need a lot of concentration, but on the other hand, you can't keep it up for long. I feel like it's enough if I can enjoy it once or twice a month. The second motorcycle is fine anytime."
"By making not only the first model but also the standard-like second model, I learned about the characteristics of each and each part, and I thought that I could accommodate cases where one motorcycle would cover both purposes. That's because the Ninja itself has a wide appeal. Even though it's a 35-year-old motorcycle, the original ride isn't outdated. As for the parts, you already know them. The rest is to clarify the purpose, and one more thing is to improve the condition of the base. By returning the base to a new level, custom parts, which I think are usually new, can be added, but in order to make the most of their performance, it's better if the base you add is at that level."
"The Ninja is more modern than you'd imagine given the age it was made, but that presupposes maintenance. It's fine to have fun working on it yourself, but I'd like you to find a good doctor, preferably a shop with the same perspective and a certain point of view, rather than moving from one shop to another, and have a professional look at the bike from time to time. If the bike is done properly, it should be more fun."
Sometimes the condition of the base motorcycle is checked by a professional. Then, the overall aim, i.e. the purpose and the look, is decided. By deciding these two points, the parts to be used are decided and the necessary balance becomes clear. Furthermore, the budget can be seen. Orime's Ninja customization also conveys a message for the future of the Ninja.
Detailed Description
This is the No. 2 motorcycle mentioned in the article. As you can see from its normal look, it is used by Orime-san mainly for city riding and touring.

Now, let's take a look at the details of the first model. The screen is a new Marvelous double bubble type (available in both clear and smoked versions as shown in the photo) that is designed to provide an ultra-clear view and has a high center section to maintain the Ninja-like style. It is fitted to the front cowl.

The cockpit makes use of the four gauges, which Orime says are "my favorite part of the Ninja" and are easy to see even when face down. It is equipped with a STACK tachometer, an air-fuel ratio monitor that fits into the voltmeter, and a Q-STARZ lap timer. The hollowed-out top bridge is a McCoy variable offset type.

In order to ensure sufficient steering angle, the standard box type left and right switches are not used, but rather a compact MotoGP type.

Ninjas often have an oil cooler installed under or in front of the enlarged radiator. Orime tried out various options and concluded that this front light section was the best. The radiator is fitted with a new dividing radiator guard that protects the core while maximizing the cooling effect.

This motorcycle is equipped with a ZRX1200R (1164cc) engine, a 6-speed transmission for the ZRX1200DAEG, connecting rods with WPC/DLC/mirror finish, and an Advantage ST-1.5 cam. The carburetor is a TMR (φ38mm) for better acceleration at medium speeds and above. The slider is a new Active 2-piece type.

When replacing a successor engine such as a ZRX1100/1200 with a GPZ900R, the rear hanger can be used as is, but the front side needs to be considered. With a GPZ-R engine, it can be mounted directly to the cylinder head, but for models that do not have this, such as the ZRX, a down tube is attached and the bolts are fastened there as well. It is recommended to change the ignition unit to Uotani SP2 like this motorcycle, or TG Nakagawa HIR. Even if the appearance of the ignition unit and coil remains the same, there are many cases where the inside gradually deteriorates and causes malfunctions, so it is important to be careful.

The fuel tank is now made of aluminum and has an inner tank cover made of FRP (both manufactured by Speed Tech). The rear end of the cover has been moved forward by 10cm, the seat rail has been moved forward, and the accessories placed there have also been moved so that "it now sits on the rear shock, increasing the amount of information coming from the rear."

For the front, it is important to first make sure that the fork width and tire grip are balanced, and that the tires are maintained and working properly. The first model has a φ43mm Ohlins RWU with a monoblock Brembo 4P + Sunstar disc + Gale Speedmaster, but it is not necessary to go this far on public roads.

The swingarm is a wheelie, the wheels are MAGTAN JB4 (3.50-17/6.00-17), the tires are Dunlop D213GP (120/70ZR17・200/60ZR17). The footpegs are made by Nitro Racing. The titanium 4-1 full exhaust is a Marvelous conical goldie, which matches the Ninja well.
