I keep riding this model because I like it.
The GSX-R series is Suzuki's core model. Including the oil-cooled engine model, it has undergone model changes almost every year for 35 years since the first 750 was released in 1985 as of 2020. Moreover, it has a strong following. The GSX-R is also the main target of Technical Garage RUN, which handles upgrades and completes that improve the quality of each part of the vehicle and enhance both performance and ride feel, and the base vehicle can be not only new but also used. However, it is said that it is necessary to make a careful judgment in order to do so. This motorcycle is a good reference for that.
"This Suzuki GSX-R1000 is the latest upgrade and complete product from our shop. Since it's a K5, it's based on a 2005 model, which is already 15 years old. The GSX-R evolves every year, so there's a big difference in the electronic controls compared to the latest models, but the original character of the K5 was particularly noteworthy, with a simple, sharp ride that turns well, and an exciting sense of power. The current model has been designed in such a way that you can see that the controls are finer and easier to ride.
So with this vehicle, we've removed the impurities from each part and worked on it to make it run with even better quality. This is true even for new models, but when the original model is an old model like this, we think about it in the same way as old models like the oil-cooled or air-cooled Katana. Even in the case of the Hayabusa, which has been a series for 20 years, the thinking is the same as for the GSX-R.
For example, this K5 was purchased new and is a one-owner vehicle. So both the owner and we know the history of the vehicle. So there is no problem, but if you are going to get one now, look at the motorcycle you are thinking of buying and see if you want it," said Sugimoto, the representative of RUN. Yes, unless it is the latest model, the upgrade will be completed based on a used vehicle. Even so, it goes without saying that a good motorcycle is good as a base motorcycle.
"If you're not sure, choose a motorcycle that's close to normal. Avoid modified motorcycles with unknown history. Especially in the case of super sports cars, there are many motorcycles that are driven roughly, so you want to avoid motorcycles with high mileage. Also, when buying from a shop, check the warranty and maintenance history. I think it's a good idea to go to a reliable shop and check the details of the delivery maintenance. It's a shop that understands the value of the car and sells it to you, rather than selling it off."
This K5 has a solid maintenance history since it was new, and the owner himself built up the qualities of a good base motorcycle, as mentioned in this story. So even when a new model came out, he continued to drive it because he liked it, and recently he improved its qualities = upgraded it, expanding his enjoyment in the future. Enjoying it as a new motorcycle, maintaining its goodness through maintenance, and making it a good base for customization = the determination for the base has been completed. Enjoy it further by customizing it. This way, you should be able to continue riding it for a long time to come.
