Harnessing the potential of Honda's horizontal single-cylinder models
When you buy a motorcycle, the first thing you should do is change the exhaust system. In recent years, however, the aftermarket has seen a gradual decline in the number of muffler manufacturers due to increasingly stringent emission and noise regulations.
In the midst of all this, Yoshimura, one of Japan's leading parts manufacturers and racing constructors, continues to develop and sell a wide variety of exhaust systems with the same attitude as in the past. Strictly speaking, Yoshimura's stance is not the same as it was a long time ago. In recent years, Yoshimura has been greatly expanding its lineup of products for Honda's horizontal single-cylinder models, and the exhaust systems for the Monkey 125, C125, Super Cub 110, and Cross Cub 110 released since 2006 have all recorded strong sales.
Of course, Yoshimura has already developed an exhaust system for the CT125 Hunter Cub, which should be the main feature of the Japanese market in 2008, and the first product, the GP-MAGNUM Cyclone, was released in October 2020. After experiencing the company's demo model I was convinced that Yoshimura's products are the right choice and that there are still great advantages to changing the exhaust systems.
Sporty blow-off and massive, gentle exhaust sound
▲The dimensions of the stainless steel exhaust pipe are 27.2/32/50.8 mm, and the weight is about -2 kg from STD2. The GP-MAGNUM Cyclone for the CT125 had none of the increased vibration or low rpm handling that can be a problem with single cylinder exhaust systems.
After riding the OEM CT125 for a long time through my work, the main merits I felt with the Yoshimura machine were
(1) Good power at the start.
(2) Powerful in the mid to high rpm range.
(3) Quickness of rpm rise felt throughout the entire range
(4) Massive sound quality.
First of all, to explain (1), the CT has a low gearing compared to the C125, which shares the same basic design, but the Yoshimura model seems to have even lower gearing, and when you twist your right hand a lot at zero starts, the front wheel almost lifts off the ground and accelerates. I thought that this characteristic would be a negative factor on rough roads, but in reality, the traction was easier to understand and I was able to open the throttle more vigorously than normal on off-road.
(2) is exactly right. Yoshimura motorcycles are clearly powerful in the mid to high rpm range. After the test ride on the public road, I tried the maximum speed on the closed course, and it was surprisingly easy to see the three-digit number which is hard to reach with the normal model.
(3) is a quality that does not show up in the numbers or the power curve, but Yoshimura vehicles are quick to react when the throttle is opened at the critical moment. In other words, the rider's consciousness and the engine feeling are easily synchronized, and this feeling leads to the fun of sport riding.
What impressed me more than the above may be the point (4). The moment I started the engine of the Yoshimura, whether it was when I left for the shooting location, when I started taking photos of the motorcycle after placing the photos, or when I started riding after taking a break at a convenience store, I was immediately greeted with a massive, gentle, and pleasant exhaust sound that was different from the normal sound. I didn't think that a 125cc single-cylinder motorcycle could give me the luxury and fullness of a large-displacement twin from overseas.
However, the only thing I noticed was the slight weakening of the throttle, which you get used to after a few minutes of riding. Anyway, after having ridden the stock CT125 for a while through work, the experience of riding the Yoshimura demo motorcycle made me fall in love with this model even more.
Power curve is better than OEM in all aspect.
This data shows that the difference in the low rpm range is very small, but the actual impression is completely different. The maximum speed of the Yoshimura motorcycle recorded on a closed course was 105km./h.
Four types in style & lightweight
As with the existing Cub series, four different silencers are available. The bolted stainless steel heat guard is included with the product. The banded carbon heat guard is optional and is priced at 12,100 yen.
- SS (Stainless steel cover) price including tax: 53,900 yen
- SSF (Satin finish cover) price including tax: 56,100 yen
- STB (Titanium blue cover) price including tax: 64,900 yen
- SC (Carbon cover) price including tax: 67,100 yen
Pursuit of ideal characteristics and exhaust sound in a limited space
Mr. Ogata, who belongs to the exhaust system division and development section, has been involved in various Yoshimura products regardless of displacement or genre. In his private life, he loves to use Ape, XR100 Motard, PCX, and so on.
"The biggest problem I had with the exhaust system for the CT125 was the routing of the exhaust pipe right after the exhaust port. Unlike the existing Cub series, the CT has an under guard. In addition to that, it took a lot of time to make the exhaust sound suitable for Japanese road conditions. Our goal was to create a high-quality sound that the rider would feel comfortable with, but not too loud. In terms of performance, we were able to bring out the full potential of the CT, not only for sport riding in the mid to high rpm range, but also for fun riding in the low rpm range."
