Product details
The strongest BMW boxer engine ever to generate rich torque
The heart of the new BMW R18 is the newly developed 2-cylinder boxer engine, the so-called "big boxer". Its striking appearance and technology reflect the legacy of the traditional air-cooled boxer engine, which BMW Motorrad has been providing an exciting riding experience for over 70 years since production began in 1923.
The R18 was the most powerful two-cylinder boxer engine ever mounted on a mass-produced motorcycle, with a displacement reaches to 1,802cc. The max output is 67kW (91ps) / 4,750rpm, and always more than 150Nm of torque is available in the engine rotation range of 2,000 to 4,000rpm, which is combined with excellent traction force and deep engine sound.
Rigid chassis style rear swingarms with a double-loop steel pipe chassis, and sealed axle drive
The center of the suspension of the new R18 is a double-loop steel pipe chassis. Its design is reminiscent of the BMW motorcycle tradition, which has been adopted this type of frame for many years. In addition, even in invisible equipment such as welded joints between steel pipe parts and cast parts or forged parts, we can feel the excellent manufacturing quality and careful attention to detail. Like the legendary BMW R5 model, the rear swingarms (with an adopted equal design) has an authentic style that bolts around the rear axle and transmission.
Telescopic forks with fork sleeves, cantilever suspension struts, wire spoke wheels, disc brakes
The suspension of the new BMW R18 intentionally omits the electronically controlled adjustment function. Instead, it has telescopic forks at the front and a stroke-dependent damper at the rear and a central suspension strut with spring preload adjustment to ensure excellent wheel control and attractive suspension comfort. Like the legendary BMW R5, the telescopic fork tubes are housed in the fork sleeves. The fork tubes are 49mm in diameter, with a 120mm front suspension stroke, and 90mm at the rear. The brake system of the new BMW R18 is equipped with twin disc brakes on the front and single disc brakes on the rear, both are combined with a 4-piston fixed caliper. In addition, the wire-spoke wheels are directing an extremely stylish appearance.
Harmonious ergonomics for optimal motorcycle control
In keeping with the BMW Motorrad philosophy, the new BMW R18 features a relaxing footrest arrangement - the so-called "mid-mounted footpegs" - that allows the rider to relax and enjoy the comfort of his or her feet. This classic position behind the cylinder is not only typical for BMW, but it also allows for a luxurious yet active riding position for optimal control of the motorcycle.
In addition to the ASC and MSR, and the 3 riding modes are available as standard, providing superior riding pleasure, and safety. Set reverse assist and hill start control to factory mounting options
The new R18 also comes with 3 riding modes as standard: Rain, Roll, and Rock. This is a rare feature in this segment and is adapted according to each rider's preference.
In addition, the automatic stability control (ASC, releasable) is standard equipment, ensuring a high level of riding safety. Furthermore, engine drag torque control (MSR) has been equipped as a standard. More on that, the hill-start control function is set as optional equipment, such as reverse assist to make it easier to move around and hill-start control to make it easier to start on a slope
New R18: The iconic style of the rigid frame style, the latest technology, the new appearance by adopting a full-fledged material
The R18 pays homage to classic models such as the BMW R5 while preserving its pure design in every detail, while successfully replacing the iconic style of the past era with modernity. It is no coincidence that functional and stylish elements, such as double loop frames, teardrop (pear) fuel tanks, exposed drive shafts, and pinstriped (factory option), reminiscent the legendary boxer model of 1936. The classic bodywork of the R18 is also made of metal suitable for a full-fledged classic model. Also, the suspension is also reminiscent of the legendary R5 as well. Despite being equipped with a double-sided swingarm and cantilever suspension struts, the R5's rigid chassis concept has been fully brought back to life visually and in modern times.
R18 First Edition: Exclusive look with paint and chrome
The new R18 will be introduced as an exclusive R18 First Edition model around the world when it is released, and in addition to this, standard models can be also reserved for specific markets. The R18 is a combination of special equipment, with a classic black finish with white pinstripe paintwork. Other features include many chrome parts, seat badges, and chrome clasps described as the "First Edition" on the side cover.
Easy-to-modify design with pre-requisites that are easy to customize and best suited for individualization
In effect, the new R18 is a much easier-to-modify the design than any other motorcycle and has already focused on these early stages of design of the motorcycle's basic layout. As a result, it has been equipped with an easy-to-remove rear frame and equipped with a pre-painted parts set easy to disassemble. Also, by carefully selecting the mounting position of the hydraulic lines of the brakes and clutches in the same manner and the wire harnesses, it is possible to easily installed by combining the hydraulic lines and wire harnesses corresponding to the higher or lower handlebar. Furthermore, the visible valve cover (cylinder head cover) and belt cover (engine housing cover) are designed to be located outside the oil chamber, making those parts extremely easy to replace.
