The number of women riders is on the rise now. I'm very happy about that. Compared to 2008 and 2018, the rate of women obtaining a standard two-wheeled license has really nearly doubled.
There are a variety of reasons for this, but the increase in the number of fun things to do in addition to riding, such as posting photos on Instagram, uploading videos to Youtube, and expanding the community of women on social networking sites, has had a big impact on this.
Even so, women still hold about 26% of all licenses for all regular and large motorcycles combined. It is also said that only 2-3% of women actually own a motorcycle and enjoy it as a daily leisure activity.
Today I wanted to give you more insight into the biology of these precious female motorcyclists, so I wrote a few tangential comparisons to the men motorcyclist. I feel pretty guilty about using the word "female" when I say I'm a female motorcyclist.
My reasons for admiring motorcycles are a little different from the men.
From a young age, men tend to like cars, trains, and other moving objects and vehicles. This is said to be instinctive, due to the influence of male hormones. Many of you may have been interested in operating radio-controlled cars and mini four-wheel-drive vehicles, starting with minicars and plastic rails in your childhood, and your interest naturally shifted to cars and motorcycles.
On the other hand, many women are interested in motorcycles not out of this instinctive interest of men, but because they think it would be cool to ride a motorcycle, or because they admire the way people ride. Do you picture yourself riding with your hair whisked out of your helmet?
Unfortunately, I've also seen many women who get their license and buy a motorcycle but get off early. That's because they get into motorcycles from the image and visuals, but when they actually get on them, they feel uneasy about their foot grounding, and handling, or they feel cold, hot, or their hair gets messy! Maybe they felt a gap in the market and retired from riding.
Incidentally, apart from the instinctive part, the "reason" to start riding motorcycles, "influence from friends or other close people" is always included in the top of the market trend surveys released by motorcycle manufacturers and related organizations, but for the female motorcyclist I know, this "close person" is almost always their "boyfriend".
The more nice men motorcyclist, the more women motorcyclist there might be. Gently escort him/her to the motorcycle and show him/her how much fun it is to ride. And don't forget that it is more effective to praise your coolness than your riding skills.
Are female motorcyclists bad drivers?
I often hear people say, "Women are bad at driving. It's prejudice! It must be because of the disparity in body size! I can't tell you how many times I've tried to stand up and jostle with the slightest car waddling, or how many times my poor footing leads to fear, and every time I fall down with a U-turn, I wish I was a little taller so I could ride smarter.
Well, these are things that are due to size differences, but unfortunately, even in 4-wheelers that don't fall over, women generally tend to be worse at driving. (Not all women are inferior to men, of course.) And it's now widely known that these differences in driving ability are due to the way the brains of men and women are made.
It is 'spatial awareness' that is believed to lead to differences in driving ability.
It is believed to have a significant impact on how quickly you recognize the flow of other vehicles as you move, and how smoothly you can merge or change lanes.
It's also often said that many women have trouble with parking in a garage, parallel parking, or reading a map if it's a car because this spatial cognitive ability is generally inferior to that of men.
Nowadays, back-up monitors and sensors are useful for garage parking, and there is no inconvenience even if you are not good at reading maps because there is a navigation system, but when merging or changing lanes, such as when touring, it would be reassuring if the motorcycle girls following you can get enough distance with the trailing vehicle to get in quickly and lead the way.
Women Motorcyclists and Mechanics
Some men motorcyclists prefer tinkering with their motorcycle to riding! Some people say that there are plenty of parts on the market that are easier to attach, but you can work hard on them and say, "This is fun!"! How many men I've seen come alive like a schoolboy saying, I'm not going to be able to do that.
On the other hand, almost all of the women motorcyclists I've seen don't do even basic maintenance themselves. That being said, I'm not at all interested in tinkering with machinery, and I'm not very good at it to begin with. What is the difference? It is said to be an instinctive difference. Men have long hunted and fought foreign enemies to protect their families. That's why having a better weapon is so important. The act of tinkering with one's motorcycle or car is an act of honing one's weaponry and satisfying one's fighting instincts.
Women are not good at mechanicals, or even interested in them in the first place. Beware of talking about mechanicals all the time, even if the person you're talking to is a female motorcyclist.
The female motorcyclists are watching.
Even if the motorcycle lover has something in common, there are many differences between men and women. The female brain is said to be more developed than the male brain in terms of cooperation and attentiveness to others. They don't like to ride at dangerous speeds or on the edge, and they prefer people who are more attentive to their surroundings. I know it's hard to recognize a woman when she's wearing a helmet, but I've seen women in motorcycles up close and personal.
I hope that more women motorcyclists will get the chance to meet great men motorcyclists.
