*Reason for purchase
I was struggling with a few different tires to use a softer compound this time because I had a horrible experience with WEX for the 02019 season (due to heckling). In the end, the price and the fact that it was DUNLOP became the decisive factor and I bought it.
*Assembly
- This is a normal tire change, but it was a little difficult because there are two beat stoppers.
- I replaced VE33 and CROSS AC10 with 0 new tires, but this time AT81EX was the easiest.
- When installing the AT81EX front tire, I hardly used the tire lever. It's like it just fit into the rim on its own.
- I also used the tire levers as normal on the AT81EX rear tires, but they were very smooth to mount on the rim. It was the easiest thing I've ever done, both physically and mentally. At any rate, the tire was soft and the work went smoothly with good sliding between the lever and the tire. I think the flexibility of the tire itself contributes to the reduction in work time, as I have used Beet Cream for tire changes in the past as well.
Cracks are forming
No blocks were blown off.
*Effects
- The number of falls/stuck has been significantly reduced.
- I was able to climb steadily up the gully.
- The front grip is better even when going down a slippery slope.
- The front brake can be applied strongly, so I can control the speed severely on descents.
Even on the uphill slope, the grip was good and I could easily lift the front end by accelerating and shifting my weight to go through the rough parts.
- The more you get used to the tires in the middle to end of the race, the more lines you can ride on the track. This will reduce the possibility of crashes and shorten the lap time as you will be able to choose your line depending on the situation. It's been a great experience. We have actually reduced the number of crashes and we have reduced the time.
- I feel like I'm getting better at it, so I can ride a lot of different course situations without having to worry about it mentally. As a result, I think it is reducing my risk of falling and my time.
*Current Status
To feel the difference again, I used a rear IRC VE33 and a front VE35 on a closed enduro course. I tried to ride it. It was a trail lesson, so the setup was similar to a race, where you had to clear any course conditions. I didn't feel any different on the smaller laps, which were closer to dry and had no rivers, gullies, muddy sections or fallen trees. But when river crossings, muddy, tree roots, and fallen trees came into the mix, I realized how good the AT81EX was. I woke up from the feeling that I was getting better and was brought back to reality (I was still terrible at it).
There are other types of tires that are considered extreme tires, so I'm planning to try other manufacturers' tires at the next WEX.
*If the reliability of the tires gives you a huge mental advantage and has such a positive effect on your actual driving, then you should definitely use them.
