In recent years, it seems that riding wear material of rain suits such as "Breathable Waterproof Material" have earned its reputation. Among them is the the well known, "GORE-TEX".

However, in recent years each manufacturer adopts its own moisture permeable and waterproof material, and it is a necessity to check the genre, as it has improved its multi function model although it is low price.
 
This time we will explain from the mechanism of "breathable waterproof material" to the performance. And the difference of the material of each manufacturer in an easy-to-understand way!

What is breathable waterproof material?

As with the breathable waterproof material, as you read, "It drains the moisture accumulated inside and does not let water from the outside pass inside". It is a material with such properties.

When examining rain wear, "water pressure resistance: XX, 000 mm or more" and "moisture permeability: XX, 000g or more! I often see these numbers. This figure means that the larger one is higher in performance which is mainly based on the test specified in the JIS standard.

With water-resistant pressure, place a cylinder with a bottom area on the fabric. And "How much water did you put into the tube and it bleeds out to the backside of the fabric?" I will decide.

Therefore, "water pressure resistance: 10,000 mm" means that the water in the cylinder was able to withstand a height of 10,000 mm (= 10 m). Numerals that are common in the performance of breathability are determined by "How many grams of water vapor could be discharged per 24h per 1 sq."

Therefore, "Breathability: 5,000 g / ㎡ / 24h" means that we were able to discharge 5,000 grams of water vapor in 24 hours b>. In general, water pressure resistance of rain wear used for motorcycles is said to be borderline "10,000 mm or more".

However, it is supposed to run under 60 km / h and when traveling on a highway such as 100km / h "water pressure resistance: 20,000 mm or more " is required.

For moisture permeability, it is not always necessary for the original purpose of rain wear. The standard moisture permeability of rain wear for motorcycles is about 5,000 to 8,000 g / m 2 · 24h, but it may be a good idea to remember the moisture permeability "13, 500 g / ㎡ / 24 h" of GORE-TEX® which is a typical moisture permeable waterproof material.

So far, I have written about water resistance and moisture permeability, but why it does not pass water?

•Mechanism

Most moisture-permeable and waterproof materials are used to sandwich film-like materials with water-repellent outer material and water-absorbing and soft touch lining. The film-like material has an ultra-fine hole of "several hundred million pieces per square".

Ultra fine holes are smaller than rain and water droplets and are larger than water vapor molecules, so rain and water drops can not pass through and maintained waterproofness. Since water vapor can pass and diverge, it seemingly has opposite functions that ensure moisture permeability.

Water permeable waterproof material adopted by RS Taichi. It is a microporous membrane based on polyurethane which realizes homogeneous microporous structure and high performance. Micropores are smaller than rain and water droplets and are larger than water vapor so that rain and water droplets can not pass through, maintaining waterproofness, and water vapor can pass and diverge, ensuring moisture permeability compatible features contradictory. Waterproof processing is applied to the outer material to further enhance the waterproof effect.
