[HONDA ADV150]Details and Test Drive Impressions

Ever since it was introduced at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, there has been a lot of talk about when the ADV150 would go on sale.
The media test drive event was held prior to the Japanese launch, so we got to test drive it right away!

Not only does it look reminiscent of Honda's new X-ADV adventure with its 745cc inline two-cylinder engine and DCT, but the engine is powered by the trusted and proven PCX150 eSP engine, so expectations are high even before you get on board.

We got to ride the PCX150 with you this time, so we'll bring you a comparison!

The playful style and easy to use engine are fun!

The first thing I noticed as soon as I started riding was the difference in position: the seat is higher than on the PCX150, which naturally raises my eye level and expands my field of vision. The wide fat bar is a rare feature on a scooter, and the new design of the instrumentation and windscreen combine to give you a wide range of information. The tires and other features give the scooter an adventure feel. Incidentally, when we tried standing on it, we found that the stepboard was at a slight angle, so it was a bit wobbly when standing. On the other hand, when I sat with my legs stretched out in front of the stepboard, my hips settled into the depression that borders the tandem seat, which held my lower body in place and made it more stable.

The engine is the same "eSP engine" as the PCX, but the intake and drivetrain have been fine-tuned to improve the torque and acceleration at good low and mid-range revolutions. We actually compared the acceleration of the PCX150 with that of the PCX150 and found that the ADV150 has better acceleration up to around 50km. Even among the same 150cc scooters, the ADV150 will be in the upper echelon of driving performance.
The suspension has been specially designed and wide block tires have been installed, which has improved the driving performance over the PCX. I could feel the difference on this run, especially in the rutted areas of the road where there are many gaps. The rear brakes are now equipped with disc brakes as well, which also improve the stopping power.

Next, I will explain each part in detail.

A style not unlike the PCX

Total length/in all directions/Total height】

ADV150:1,960mm/760mm/1,150mm
PCX150: 1,925mm/745mm/1,105mm

[Vehicle weight]

ADV150:134kg
PCX150: 131kg

The frame, engine and other parts of the engine are based on the PCX150, but there are differences not only in design but also in performance.

The design features a variable screen like the X-ADV, a top-facing muffler, and digital gauges with an adventure-like visor. Size wise, it's not much different from the PCX150, but the ruggedness around the front mask makes it look bigger than its size.

In terms of driving performance, the suspension has been changed, and not only is it longer in length, but it has a reservoir tank. The longer suspension has increased seat height and ground clearance, which contributes to better driving performance over rough terrain. The wheels are now 13 inches smaller at the rear, an inch smaller, but the width has been widened from 120 to 130 sizes, and block-patterned tires are now standard. In line with the changes to the rear, the brakes, which were drum brakes on the PCX150, are now disc brakes on the ADV150.

PCX150: 764mm

[Footnote]

The seat height is about 30mm higher than PCX150. The seat height is 30mm higher than PCX150, so our staff (173cm tall) was able to get their feet on the PCX150, but the ADV150 was able to lift both of their heels.

Active, adventurous light

The lights are all LED without compromise, even on a scooter.
Best of all, the newly designed hanging positional light design is so cool!
Together with the "X" shape in the tail light, it creates an active image.

The system features an emergency stop signal that notifies following vehicles of emergency braking as quickly as possible. In case of emergency braking, the hazard lights flash at high speed to alert the driver behind the vehicle.

Information-rich separate meter

The layout of the meter allows for more information to be displayed by separating the speedometer from the various indicators.
The top row in the speedometer shows, from left to right, the fuel system, date, clock, oil change indicator, and odo trip meter. The lower left hand side switches to show the fuel consumption system, temperature diameter and voltmeter. The large gauge on the right side is an instantaneous fuel economy gauge.

Wide fat bar for a scooter.

The handlebar has a wide fat bar that is very adventurous.
There are no major features in the switches, but like the PCX150, the idling stop is on./The OFF switch is on the right side.

With the smart key system, there is no need to insert the key. With the smart key in hand, you can turn the key on and unlock the seat and fuel port.

Equipment to aid in a comfortable ride

The screen is movable and can be adjusted in two different positions. The difference between the low and high positions is 71mm and the height can be adjusted without using any tools thanks to the newly developed slide mechanism.
In the low position, the wind will hit your chest, which is recommended when you want to feel the right amount of wind in town. On the other hand, when the wind is strong, such as when driving at high speed, the amount of wind your upper body receives will be reduced and fatigue will be reduced.

The inner box has a 2L capacity. It has an ACC socket inside, so you can charge your phone while driving. It's not as deep as we thought it would be, so we couldn't fit a 500ml plastic bottle in it.

Specially designed undercarriage

The front forks are upright but have a 130mm stroke. The front forks provide a high quality ride not only around town, but also on uneven surfaces. Twin shocks with reservoirs, 120mm of stroke length and 3-stage rate springs provide excellent road-following capability, even when riding with two people or on rough surfaces.

Disc brakes front and rear, as opposed to drum brakes on the PCX150, are used for improved stopping power.

Specially designed block pattern tires have been installed for driving performance. Wheel sizes have also been changed from the 14-inch front and rear of the PCX150 to a combination of 14 inches in the front and 13 inches in the rear, which contributes to improved handling and ride comfort.

Improved low and mid-range RPMs

Maximum power output: 15PS/8,500 rpm
Maximum torque: 14N-m/6,500 rpm

Based on the eSP engine, which has a reputation for being powerful yet fuel efficient, the intake and drivetrain have been optimized to improve torque and acceleration performance in the low and mid range. We actually compared the acceleration of the ADV150 with the PCX150 and found that the ADV150 has better acceleration performance. A stop-idling system has also been adopted to achieve quietness along with improved environmental performance and fuel economy.
The muffler is also newly designed for the ADV150 and has an upwardly shaped layout for more adventurous driving performance.

adv150_02.jpgThe eSP engine is known for its powerful driving and fuel economy.
adv150_08.jpgThe muffler has an upswept shape like the X-ADV.

Tank capacity for long-distance touring

Tank capacity: 8L

The fueling port is located in front of the seat hinge, like the PCX150, and a smart key is used to open the fueling port. With a tank capacity of 8 liters and WMTC mode values, the fuel consumption per liter is 44.It boasts 1km, which means that it can be driven continuously for more than 300km by simple calculation. It is not only for everyday use, but also for long distance touring with ease.

Flexible seating and ample storage space

Capacity under the seat: 27L

The seat is slim towards the front for easy leg access. Not only is it easy to get your feet out of the seat, but it also holds the seat in place with your thighs.
The capacity under the seat is 27 liters. A full-face helmet can be stored in the space in front of the seat. Together with the space at the rear, it is useful for storing rain gear and other items you want to keep on hand at all times. The seat opens until it is perpendicular to the ground for easy loading and unloading.
The stepboard also has a highly flexible layout depending on the situation.

Here's a custom vehicle ahead of time!

At this test drive event, a vehicle with genuine options was displayed as a reference exhibit, and we would like to introduce the options.

adv150_50.jpg

Honda Genuine Accessories installed
Unlike the overseas models, the Japanese models are designed for colder climates and generate more power. For this reason, the power generated is sufficient to compensate for the installation of a grip heater as a factory option.
A dedicated rear carrier and top box configuration is also available, and the top box has a large capacity of 35 liters to accommodate touring luggage.

Car with customized parts
It was custom made with red anodized aluminum parts that matched the gayety red style and gave it a unified look.
Dress up parts include the lever, bar end, master cylinder cover and clamp, and bolt caps. The hard parts include the sidebars, fog lights, fenderless kit, and a Moriwaki full exhaust muffler with a beautiful burnished color.
With such a wide variety of parts available even before the release of the product, we can expect to see more new products in the future.
