Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. has announced the launch in Europe and the United States of its new supersport model, the "YZF-R7," which features a 689cm3 engine developed based on the "Crossplane Concept "* and mounted on a lightweight frame. Yamaha also plans to launch the product in Japan after the winter of 2021.
The YZF-R7 was developed based on the concept of "Fun Master of Super Sport". Based on the basic components of the MT-07, which is supported as a sports model by a wide range of riders, the new model harmonizes the latest supersport style and sporty handling to create a supersport model that can be handled by riders with a wide range of skills. This model was designed to be "a supersport that riders of all skill levels can handle.
Main features include: 1) CP2 engine for easy handling and exhilarating, sporty riding; 2) lightweight frame with well-balanced rigidity; 3) inverted front suspension for excellent frontal contact feel and specially designed rear suspension; 4) sporty riding position; and 5) styling that inherits the DNA of the YZF-R 5) styling that inherits the DNA of the YZF-R series.
You can enjoy cool and fun driving in various scenes from city streets, highways, winding roads to sports driving at the track.
The Crossplane Concept is a design concept that efficiently extracts only the combustion torque produced by the combustion chamber alone, with little inertial torque.

Main features of the YZF-R7
1) CP2 engine for easy handling and uplifting, sporty driving
It uses a CP2 (cross-plane two-cylinder) engine with the same specifications as the 2021 MT-07, optimizing the secondary ratio from 43/16=2.687 of the MT-07 to 42/16=2.625, resulting in an uplifting and sporty ride.
The A&S® clutch* is the first of its kind on an MT-07 model. In addition to reducing the clutch lever's operating load, the A&S® clutch suppresses the effects of high back-torque on the vehicle's behavior and prevents excessive engine braking, thereby supporting driving performance.

2) Lightweight frame with tuned rigidity balance
The lightweight diamond frame has been tuned for rigidity balance. Using the same basic frame as the MT-07, the aluminum center brace is rigidly mounted and the torsional rigidity around the pivot is improved by optimizing the tightness of each part of the frame. The upside down front suspension also contributes to the sporty handling of the vehicle with its linear response to inputs, agility when turning, and responsiveness to step work.
3) Inverted front suspension for superior front ground contact feel and specially designed rear suspension
Newly designed inverted front suspension with ø41mm inner tube. It provides a good front ground contact feeling when turning and braking. The damping force and spring constant have been optimized for easy understanding of the vehicle behavior and maneuverability on winding roads and short circuits.
The rear adopts a link-type monocross suspension. The shock unit's damping characteristics and spring constant were developed specifically for the "YZF-R7". The links have been adjusted in line with the adoption of the new dimensions, and a horizontal arrangement similar to that of the MT-07 has been adopted to improve space efficiency and contribute to mass centralization and compactness.
4) Sporty riding position
The riding position is sporty, easy to get down and easy to hold when braking.
In addition, the sporty separate handlebar has a narrow angle that is balanced by the hip position and footrest position/A droop angle is adopted. The seat is narrower and wider behind the seat, allowing for greater positional freedom and consideration of a wide range of applications, from winding roads and highways to sports riding on circuits. In addition, the step with the tandem seat contributes to the seat stopper-like appearance.
5) Styling that inherits the DNA of the YZF-R series
Our design concept is "Skinny Proportion for Perfect Control. The YZF-R7's slim engine has a low moment of inertia, which is particularly beneficial when turning and turning back. The small frontal projection area also contributes to reduced aerodynamic drag. The embodiment of "Skinny Proportion" leads to the enjoyment of handling the machine.
It also inherits the R-series styling icons of the YZF-R1. These include a silhouette based on horizontal lines, an air management cowl that maximizes aerodynamic performance, M-shaped ducts and dual-eye position lamps. A single bi-functional headlamp is positioned in the centre of the M-shaped duct.
Other Features
- The Quick Shift System, which supports agile and smooth upshifting, is available for the first time on the MT-07 (as an option).
- The radial master cylinder contributes to excellent control and the radial mount caliper supports strong stopping power.
- New full LCD meter (high color saturation negative-positive reversible LCD surface)
