[Test Drive] What Makes the New NMAX Stand Out in Style and Performance?

Yamaha's unique "BLUE CORE" engine combines the joy of riding with fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness at a high level. The 125cc scooter "Yamaha NMAX" was released in 2016 as the first domestic model. The BLUE CORE engine was then evolved in 2017 and 2021 to comply with stricter emission regulations. Then, in April 2025, a new NMAX was released with revamped styling and refined parts.

New styling and revised front and rear suspension

The BLUE CORE engine installed in the NMAX was designed with a focus on three points: high-efficiency combustion, high cooling performance, and reduced loss. It is equipped with a variable valve mechanism (Variable Valve Actuation) that switches the intake valve from low-medium speed to high-speed at 6000 rpm, and is characterized by its compatibility between riding fun and fuel efficiency and environmental performance. In 2017 and 2021, the inside of the engine was changed to comply with stricter exhaust gas regulations. In addition, it is equipped with a "Smart Motor Generator" that realizes quiet engine start, a "Stop & Start System" that contributes to low fuel consumption, front and rear ABS, traction control, and other equipment.

The NMAX has a new style. The side cover with a "boomerang" motif that represents the powerful flow of the engine has been redesigned, and the front and rear faces have also been changed to a serious image. The LED headlights have been changed from reflector type to projector type, and the front and rear turn signals are now LED.

In addition, the rear suspension stroke has been extended by 5 mm, and the front suspension has been modified with the addition of an oil lock mechanism. The BLUE CORE engine now features a hydraulic cam chain tensioner. The 2025 NMAX inherits the characteristics of Yamaha's MAX series sports scooter, but has a more manly styling.

The NMAX's styling expresses confidence with a dignified appearance that leaves an impression of "a sharp expression that overwhelms the viewer." In addition to the matte dark gray shown in the image, it is available in four colors: matte dark reddish gray, white, and gray.

The LED headlamps have been changed to a two-stage projector type with an upper and lower lamp. In addition to the position lamps, the turn signals also use LEDs. This gives the car a more manly image.

The LED tail lamps and stop lamps have a new design based on the "M" motif of the "MAX series" and have good visibility. The rear indicators have also been converted to LED and are equipped with a hazard warning function.

The handlebar, seat, and fuel tank can be unlocked with the smart key. The left pocket can hold up to 1.5kg, and the DC connector has been changed to a USB Type-C socket. The right pocket has a lid and the maximum load capacity is 0.3kg. Capacity 7 on the top of the center tunnel.A 1L fuel tank filler is installed.

The seat offers a high degree of freedom in positioning. It also has good cushioning, making it comfortable to sit in and less tiring.

The trunk under the seat has a capacity of about 23 liters. In addition to the full-face helmet used this time, it can also store rainwear.

Along with the 5mm extension of the rear suspension stroke, the seat height has also increased from 765 to 770mm. However, a rider who is 172cm tall could not feel the increase in seat height.

When I tried to put both feet on the ground, my heels would lift up, just like the old model. However, since the body is light, I didn't feel uneasy when stopping.

The rider is 156cm tall and said, "My heels would float on the ground with the old model, but with the 5mm increase, I don't feel like it's gotten any worse."

New styling expresses improved convenience and quality

The 2025 NMAX headlights have a mirror-imaged "N" motif. The carbon laminated pattern on the gap between the seat and the bottom of the side covers improves the quality of the details.

The 2025 BLUE CORE engine has the same convenient features as the "Smart Motor Generator" that starts quietly and smoothly with a single press of the starter switch, and the idling stop function, but the cam chain tensioner that controls the tension of the cam chain is now hydraulic, which contributes to reducing friction.

When you start the engine and open the throttle a little from idling, the torque rises firmly and the vehicle starts smoothly. The engine speed also rises smoothly from there, and even though I didn't open the throttle that much, the meter displayed the letters "VVA" indicating that the intake cam switches at 6000 rpm. The old engine also demonstrated acceleration that allowed it to lead the flow of traffic with ease, but the acceleration of the new engine is comparable. This is only natural, as both the maximum output and maximum torque have not changed.

However, there was less vibration when the engine speed increased, and the torque output when accelerating again after releasing the throttle was smoother.

It could be said that the body's response to throttle operation has become milder, but it is not slower than the previous NMAX, and it felt easier to handle. This is probably because the smoothness of the increase in speed was experienced as one of the effects of reduced friction.

The new display adopts a "telescope cockpit design" that reduces eye movement and makes it easier to concentrate on riding. It also has a function to link with a smartphone with the dedicated app "Yamaha Motorcycle Connect (Y-Connect)" installed, and can display calls and SNS notifications. The screen shape has also been changed to match the new display and new front face, and it has a high streamlining effect while riding, improving comfort.

The new BLUE CORE engine has been refined down to the finest detail. The radiator cover has been textured to hide scratches. The lower part of the side cover now features a new carbon laminate pattern.

The LCD display has a new design. It mainly shows the speed and also displays the smartphone connection. Various warning lights are located at the top.

Adding a sophisticated feel to sporty driving

The high rigidity of the NMAX body results in a sporty ride, making it fun to drive even in urban areas.

The front and rear suspensions of the previous model also braced themselves deep inside, absorbing large shocks firmly and providing a flat ride. The front and rear suspensions of the new NMAX absorb shocks smoothly, and rather than using up the extended rear suspension stroke, it felt like it converged cleanly. The flat ride has been retained from the previous model, but there is less unnecessary machine behavior, adding a higher quality to the ride. With new elements such as the newly designed front face, the detailed body design, and the improved streamlining effect, as well as the comfortable ride provided by the new suspension, it also felt like the ride quality had become more luxurious.

In terms of getting on and off, the flat-floor model is more convenient than the NMAX, which has a center tunnel, but thanks to that center tunnel (frame), there is a clear difference in the rigidity of the body. The strength of the entire body, including the suspension mounting parts, feels higher than that of the flat-floor model, which results in stable handling and a sense of security while driving. Another big advantage is that holding the center tunnel with both feet makes it easier to decide on your riding form and control the machine.

The torque characteristics of the new BLUE CORE engine feel mild, but the smooth acceleration is still there, and the balance with the body with reduced unnecessary machine behavior is good, and the sporty riding that the previous NMAX models have cultivated is not lost. The new NMAX is characterized by its high overall quality, including its sporty riding and a body that is carefully designed down to the smallest detail. It is a perfect choice for those who want to enjoy a high-quality ride on a 50cc scooter.

The front suspension now features an oil lock mechanism to prevent bottoming out. The front fender features a new design that is integrated with the fork cover.

The rear suspension stroke has been extended by 5mm and the damping characteristics have been adjusted to improve ride comfort and road holding ability.
