New “MT-07 ABS” from YAMAHA Motor to Launch with “Y-AMT,” which Eliminates the Need for Clutch Operation

YAMAHA Motor Sales Co., Ltd. will release the new "MT-07 ABS" road sports model on February 26. The new model is equipped with a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, in-line 2-cylinder 688 cm3 engine based on the "Crossplane Concept". The MT-07 Y-AMT ABS equipped with the Y-AMT automatic transmission, which eliminates the need to operate the clutch lever or shift pedal, will also be released simultaneously. Annual Japanese sales of both models are expected to reach 500 units.

This model was developed based on the concept of "The Advocator of Riding Delight." In addition to the conventional features of a torquey engine, easy handling body, and high cost performance, the new model has enhanced quality, advanced features, and a sense of lightness.

Major changes include the first use of the YCC-T electronic throttle, a sound that accentuates the torquey feeling, a newly designed frame and rear arm with optimized rigidity balance for improved rideability, a new inverted front suspension and new settings for the link-type monocross suspension, The new model also features a 5-inch full-color TFT meter with connectivity function, a new compact LED headlight and LED position light, and other functional equipment, as well as new styling that foreshadows the fun of riding that only a large motorcycle can offer.

Main Features

First CP2 Engine to Adopt “YCC-T” for Smooth Torque Characteristics Across the Entire RPM Range

The CP2 (crossplane concept 2-cylinder) engine is the first YAMAHA Motor engine to newly adopt the “YCC-T” (YAMAHA Chip Controlled Throttle = YAMAHA electronically controlled throttle). The YCC-T is said to deliver the easy-to-manage torque of the CP2 engine in a more linear manner, with response and output characteristics that are in line with the rider's wishes.

The YCC-T also enables the YAMAHA Ride Control (YRC) function, which allows the rider to select engine output characteristics and the degree of intervention of various electronic devices according to preference and road conditions, and a quick shifter that can also be used to downshift (available as an option on standard models), making the new model suitable for a wider range of riding situations. (available as an option on the standard model), making it possible to respond to a wider range of driving situations.

Sound that Accentuates the Torquey Feeling

The unique sound of the CP2 engine with Acoustic Amplifier Technology is based on a mixture of high-pitched and low-pitched chords, and the intake system has been tuned to provide a more torquey sound as the throttle opens and engine speed increases. The air cleaner box, air intake system, and air intake system have been tuned to provide a more torquey sound.

The shape and layout of the air cleaner box, intake ducts, intake funnels, and intake covers were optimized through verification and adjustment. The “Acoustic Amplifier Technology” was employed to ensure that the intake sound generated by the intake ports reaches the rider's ears efficiently, and four holes were placed in the fuel tank cover to achieve a rumbling, roaring “rumble” sound. The sound is designed to accentuate the character of the MT series.

Newly Designed Frame and Rear Arm with Optimized Rigidity Balance for Improved Rideability

The riding position has also been improved by redesigning the updated backbone type high-tensile steel tubular frame to increase strength and rigidity. The company says it has optimized the pipework, diameter, wall thickness, sheet metal, etc. of all parts except the head pipe to meet the requirements of both installing an electronically controlled throttle and a new gear shift mechanism (Y-AMT) and securing air cleaner capacity, adopting an inverted front suspension system, and securing stability. The mass is said to be the same as the current model (approx. 14.8 kg), while the rigidity balance has been optimized for improved stability and nimble handling, together with the adoption of an inverted fork.

The riding position has also been adjusted in line with the frame change, and the handlebar position has been moved forward and down to increase the grip width for a sportier ride with a greater sense of oneness with the chassis. The foot point was lowered to provide a more comfortable riding position, and the fuel tank and cover were slimmed down to improve the ease of holding and sense of unity when knee gripping.

Strengthened Suspension Including New Inverted Front Suspension

An inverted front suspension with a 41mm dia. inner tube has been newly adopted. The rear is equipped with a link-type monocross suspension with adjustable preload and rebound damping force. Both the front and rear suspensions are said to be optimized for rigidity according to the updates and dimensions of each body part, providing a good ground contact feeling when turning and braking, and excellent responsiveness.

The front brake caliper is newly equipped with a radial mount type with superior mounting rigidity to achieve stable braking force and excellent controllability. Newly designed spin-forged wheels, which contribute to even greater weight reduction and a corresponding reduction in the moment of inertia compared to the previous model, have been adopted for the first time on the MT-07 to achieve agile handling.

5-inch Full-Color TFT Meter with Connectivity and Other Convenient Features

A 5-inch TFT meter is adopted. In addition to speed and tachometer with digital bars, the meter is equipped with display functions such as fuel gauge, average fuel consumption, water temperature gauge, air temperature gauge, and shift indicator. Information operation and selection of each function is performed by operating the steering wheel switches, and the display pattern can be selected from four types. By connecting the vehicle to a smartphone with the dedicated “Y-Connect (YAMAHA Motorcycle Connect)” application installed, YRC settings and various information and images can be displayed on the meters at hand. A wide variety of content is available, including vehicle management and notifications of incoming phone calls and e-mails.

In addition, by installing the “Garmin StreetCross” app on a smartphone and pairing it with the vehicle, navigation functions can be used on the meter screen. In addition, MT-07 Y-AMT is equipped with a seesaw-type lever for shifting up and down on the left side of the handlebar switch. On the right side of the handlebar switch is a newly designed handlebar switch that can be operated intuitively, including an additional button for switching between AT and MT modes. Newly added flashers with new functions (“two-stage flasher function,” “emergency function,” and “forget-to-turn-off function” in addition to left/right direction indication and flashing function for hazard).

New Styling

Under the design concept of “Natural Simplicity for everyone,” the new model inherits the lightweight slim body that contributes to agility and the styling that evokes a torquey ride, both of which were established by the previous generation. The proportions and form of the machine have been refined to be more natural and simple, so that riders of various sizes and riding skills can enjoy the fun of riding. In particular, from the tank area to the seat, the knee grip has been made easier, making it easier to feel a sense of oneness with the machine. The new front mask features a new, smaller and thinner LED headlight, with a thin position light positioned below the headlight to create the appearance of two eyes, giving the front mask a neat yet familiar look.

The coloring is “blue” to emphasize YAMAHA's racing image, “matte light gray” for a futuristic and clean image with bright sky blue wheels as the new symbolic color of the MT series, and “matte light gray” for a serious sports image. The “Matte Dark Gray” color scheme enhances the serious sporty image of the motorcycle.

Y-AMT, an Electronically Controlled Shift Mechanism with a Compact Layout (MT-07 Y-AMT only)

The MT-07 Y-AMT is equipped with Y-AMT (YAMAHA Automated Transmission), a system that automates gear changes by having an actuator take care of left-hand clutch operation and left-foot shift operation. The Y-AMT system is specially set to match the short wheelbase, lightweight chassis and newly adopted suspension, and is said to provide the joys of the original YAMAHA model with simple operation.

The MT-07 Y-AMT is equipped with an AT mode that can be used for all-round riding, including city streets and winding roads, It also has a kick-down function for quick acceleration.
