Four machines unveiled in world’s first custom project for BMW’s classic cruiser “R 12”!

BMW just released the new model "R12" this spring. This model is part of the Heritage lineup, and the "BMW R 12 Custom Project" has been launched to officially customize it for the first time in the world. The other day, four completed models were finally unveiled. We would like to introduce the machines that were completed by some of Japan's leading builders.

These machines will be on display for a limited time only, from Friday, August 23rd to Friday, August 30th, at "FREUDE by BMW" in Minato Ward, Tokyo.

Four answers to a fresh interpretation of the classic cruiser: the "R 12 CUSTOM PROJECT"

The R12 is a BMW cruiser model that first appeared in the fall of 2023. It features a classic silhouette that revives the name of the model produced in 1935. The engine is a 1169cc horizontally opposed two-cylinder, water-cooled DOHC. It produces 95PS/6500rpm and is mounted on a low and long steel frame. The seat is low, but the large 19-inch front wheels provide cruiser-like handling and presence. In addition, the two-type riding mode switching function gives it a sporty character, making it a unique and innovative machine.

"El Viento" By HAMANS CUSTOM

The "El Viento" made by HAMANS CUSTOM is a cafe racer with dual headlights and a handmade mini cowl. The handlebars are mounted as low as possible, creating a straight silhouette from the tank to the seat cowl. In order to create this straight line, the seat frame and air cleaner box were made to order. The R12's steel tubular frame and boxer engine stand out.

The entire body is painted olive green with pinstripes as accents. Surprisingly, the wheels remain standard. However, the paint has been stripped off and the wheels have been treated with Cerakote, which makes the metallic texture even more pronounced.

"MOON Arrow" By MOONEYES

MOONEYES, a leader in the Japanese customization scene, found a racing style in the R12. The front and rear wheels were converted to fit the BMW K series and fitted with a unique moon disc. To match the one-sided Paralever swingarm, the front brake was deliberately made single on only one side to unify the look from the left side.

The tank and seat cowl were also selected to be of a minimal size, and the handlebars and suspension were set low like a land speed racer. The fairing, which has a strong presence, is curved to avoid the engine cylinder, expressing a sense of speed with its curved surfaces, befitting the name MOON Arrow. An iconic machine that is recognizable as MOONEYES from any angle was born.

"Legal Weapon R 12" By TRIJYA CUSTOM MOTORCYCLES

Trija, known for custom Harley-Davidson, proposed an "R12 that can be legally enjoyed." The body was carefully 3D scanned, and the parts were produced with an eye on future commercialization, creating a unique personality without compromising the standard style.

The fuel tank is made from the original, but the sides have been modified. The oil cooler is fitted with 3D printed winglets, and the intake manifold has been newly designed to be tight. The side covers and seat cowl have also been modified to enhance the modern impression of the standard body. The front and rear wheels are one-off, making them the eye-catching feature of this machine. The muffler is made by Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hide, and new parts such as a custom suspension made by YSS and a handlebar made by AELLA are also included. What's more, it's amazing that all the parts are finished with bolts.

"R 12 Sand Speeder Mark l. "By CHIRIHAMA SAND FLATS

This sand drag machine, which exudes a unique racy look, was made by Chirihama Sand Flats, which organizes beach drag races held at Chirihama Beach in Ishikawa Prefecture. It is a machine that incorporates all the elements required of a sand drag machine.

The bottom case is matched to the front fork is 2 inches longer than the standard, and the stem is a one-off machined stem. The front brake is not necessary for a sand drag machine, so it has been removed, and only dish wheels decorate the feet. In addition, the rear end has been made rigid, and the motorcycle height has been lowered to the limit. The fuel tank and seat have been minimalized by relocating various accessories. The handlebars and seat have a tight silhouette, which also pursues practicality as a racer.

This gem of a machine is open to the public until August 30th

These four motorcycles are the world's first custom R12s. They will be on public display at "FREUDE by BMW" in Azabudai Hills, Minato-ku, Tokyo, for one week from Friday, August 23rd to Friday, August 30th.
