New engine is finally introduced to the popular mild sports route that expanded the XJ650 to 900!

Yamaha has a long history of adhering to the philosophy that a sports motorcycle should be mild enough to be easy to handle, as has traditionally been the case.
A typical example is the 1980 XJ650, which was highly acclaimed in Europe for its excellent handling, aiming for an area as close to supersport as possible, while the shaft drive provided neutral nimbleness based on stability.

As an extension of this concept, the size was expanded to the XJ900 to meet the need for a larger displacement. It was quite a challenge to increase the displacement from 653 cc to 853 cc on the same base, but the XJ900 succeeded in gaining the trust of skilled riders in touring sports.

In the 1990s, however, supersports models were replaced by liter machines, and touring motorcycle were further increased in engine displacement, such as the FJ1200, and there was a growing demand in Europe for a middle-class 900cc model that was easier to ride.
