Fuel economy values in WMTC mode as a reference for actual riding

Until a little more than 10 years ago, the fuel economy figures in catalogs and other sources were constant-ground fuel economy values. These figures were measured on a flat, straight paved road at a speed of 60 km/h (two passengers for 51 cc models and above; one passenger for 50 cc models). The 50cc models were ridden at 30km/h with one passenger.
However, these figures would never have been obtained if the vehicle had been driven normally. This is not surprising, since there is no such thing as a situation where a car is driven at a constant speed of 60 km/h on a flat road without acceleration or deceleration.

The trend was to use fuel economy figures that were more in line with actual usage conditions and that could be used as a reference, which led to the adoption of WMTC mode values. It is unnecessary to remember that WMTC is an acronym for “World-wide harmonized Motorcycle Test Cycle, but motorcycle catalogs from July 2013 onward have begun to include WMTC mode values.

The explanation is that the values are calculated based on emission test results measured in riding modes that are international standards, including starting, accelerating, and stopping, and that the driving mode classes are classified according to displacement and maximum speed.
