NEW MOTORCYCLE: BMW R12/R12 nineT Finally Maunched! The Center of Attention at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show

bmwr12motasai16.webp Motorcycle & Industry

The successful Tokyo Motorcycle Show is still fresh in your mind.
Among the many vehicles on display, two stood out in the BMW booth: the R12 and the R12 nineT. They were the R12 and the R12 nineT. The two vehicles, which have already been on sale since April, were the talk of the town as a classic series equipped with a newly designed engine and frame.
We would like to introduce them again with photos taken at the event.

What is the difference between R12 and R12 nineT?

As many of you may already know, the R12 and R12 nineT have completely different lineages. Although they are sister models bearing the same name "R12," the R12 nineT is a European roadster, while the R12 is an American cruiser, and their vehicle classifications and tastes are clearly different.

In 2013, BMW Motorrad celebrated its 90th anniversary with the R nineT.
The new R12 nineT is a naked model in the same spirit. The R12 is a completely new cruiser type from BMW.

The new R12. The exterior is unmistakably a cruiser.

The R12 is a cruiser-style car equipped with BMW's traditional horizontally opposed boxer engine. The air/oil-cooled DOHC boxer, now one of the few in the company, produces 95 PS of power and a powerful 110 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm.

Even though it is a cruiser, it is also well-versed in sports characteristics, with a 45mm inverted telescopic fork for the front forks. Riding mode can be selected between ROCK and ROLL modes, with ROCK mode offering dynamic riding. Of course, the ROLL mode can also be used for a leisurely cruising experience.

Telescopic inverted forks are used. Casters are 132.5mm, a cruiser-like angle.

The tank is finished in a distinctive trapezoid shape. Gold handlebar accents.

A secondary drive cardan shaft is built into the powerful cast aluminum cantilever swingarm. The tires are 19 inches at the front and 16 inches at the rear, making it a classic cruiser, but the engine, drive system, and various other unique factors give it a ride that can only be experienced on a BMW.

On display at the motorcycle show was Avus Silver Metallic. A total of three colors are available in the lineup, with Black Storm Metallic and Aventurine Red Metallic also presented.

The silencer is plated for a classic look but also has a "high spec" feel unique to the cantilever type.

The R12 nineT roadster is original in design, driving, and everything else.

The new R12 nineT. The body composed of many aluminum parts has a different presence.

As mentioned above, the R12 nineT was reissued over 10 years after its predecessor, the R nineT. The displacement and bore x stroke ratio are the same as those of the R12 with the same engine, but the maximum output of 109 PS and maximum torque of 115 Nm at 6,500 rpm are superior in terms of power.

The 45mm inverted fork is spring preloaded, rebound, and compression adjustable.
The front and rear suspensions have a stroke of 120mm, 30mm longer than the R12's, and the wheel sizes are 17 inches front and rear, indicating that the R12 is specialized for riding.

Daringly small gauges create a sense of luxury. Smart key specification, but there is a key cylinder for the steering wheel lock.

Similar to the R12, it has an aluminum cantilevered swing arm and shaft ride mechanism.

Three riding modes are selectable: RAIN, ROAD, and DYNAMIC.
In addition to ABS and traction control, it is equipped with DBC (Dynamic Brake Control), automatically increasing brake pressure when emergency braking is detected.

This time, on display at the booth was an early production limited package in aluminum.
The clear-coated fuel tank is made of brass-coated aluminum and can be purchased separately as an optional part. The lineup also includes Black Storm Metallic and Sun Remo Green Metallic.

The 719 aluminum tank can be installed as an option. The main unit alone is a premium price of ¥345,400 (including tax) and is standard equipment for the first limited edition model.
