Hello, Webike Plus Readers! I am Sasu Rider, a man who prefers touring with a high level of female power to going to fashionable cafes rather than touring with a man who just keeps on riding from morning to night.

On January 25, I attended the official launch and test ride of Triumph's new model, which I can assure you will look great in a cafe!

Incidentally, this is the company's first machine that can be ridden with a regular motorcycle license.

At last! Speed 400, Scrambler 400X

In recent years, an increasing number of foreign manufacturers, such as KTM and Husqvarna, BMW, and Harley, have released machines under 400 cc that can be ridden with a standard motorcycle license!

They are the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400X. Both are brand-new models equipped with a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 398 cc.

Incidentally, on the 25th, a grand presentation (plus party) was held at a venue in Tokyo, and I, who live in the countryside of Hokkaido, was in a complete state of excitement.

The climbers were nervous just passing through here.

Speed 400 Features

The Speed 400 is a legitimate roadster model classified in Triumph's Modern Classic series.

The beautiful form of this machine is so eye-catching that a rider could eat three cups of white rice just by looking at it, and the high quality of every part makes it obvious that this is not a machine that has simply been reduced in cost and displacement!

I thought that the bar-end mirrors in the normal state were highly fashionable.

The engine is a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine named the newly developed TR series engine, with a displacement of 398 cc, maximum output of 40 PS, and maximum torque of 38 Nm.

All lights are LED, dual-channel ABS brakes front and rear, and traction control.

The instrument panel is analog/digital for both analog and digital users, with an analog speedometer and a digital tachometer, as well as a fuel gauge and gear indicator.

The tire size of Speed 400 is「F:110/70 R17、R:150/60 R17」and the standard tire is Pirelli's 「DIABLO ROSSO3」.

Incidentally, the body color variations are Carnival Red, Caspian Blue, and Phantom Black. I like red for motorcycles, but I was quite attracted to the bright Caspian Blue, however!

Features of Scrambler 400X

The Scrambler 400X shares the same basic platform, including the engine, as the Speed 400.

The Scrambler 400X has the same basic platform as the Speed 400, including the engine, etc. The Scrambler 400X is recognizable at a glance by its majestic styling and is slightly larger than the Speed 400.

It has a power that is hard to believe it is 400cc!

In addition to the equipment of the Speed 400, the Scrambler 400X has a mesh guard on the headlight, hand guards, bar pads on the handlebars, and a specially designed exhaust!

In other words, while the basic platform is the same, it is a completely different machine from the Speed 400, and I must admit that I couldn't help but think to myself, "Triumph is very good at packaging.

The biggest difference between the Scrambler 400X and the Speed 400 is the seat height and tire size/brand. The seat height of the Speed 400 is 790mm, while the Scrambler is 835mm, and the tire sizes are「F:110/70 R17、R:150/60 R17」for the Speed 400, The Scrambler has「F:100/90 R19、R:140/80 R17」and blocky "Metzler CARRU STREET" tires.

Incidentally, the Scrambler 400X is available in three color variations: matte khaki green, carnival red, and phantom black, I prefer the matte khaki green, which is full of outdoor style!

Footpeg of Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X

Next, let's check the footpegs of both of them, which everyone is interested in.

I am 173cm tall, weigh 51kg, and have longer legs than the average Japanese, according to my chiropractor, so I hope you can see my specs on the assumption that my legs are not so helpful!

So, first, let's look at the footing of Speed 400. The seat height is 790mm, which is low for an imported car, so both of my legs are sticky and my knees are bent, which is extremely good.

Incidentally, the motorcycle weighs 171 kg, which is average for this class, but perhaps the balance of the car body is good. I felt that it was lighter than the weight!

20240129_triumph_7.webp

Good foot grounding!

20240129_triumph_8.webp

Both feet are sticky.

Next, I was surprised at the foot grounding of Scrambler 400X!

I usually ride a BMW R1200GS with 850mm seat height and both heels touch the ground, but on the Scrambler 400X with 835mm seat height, my heels were floating (partly due to the ground slope).

One of the reasons may be that the step is located at the end of the natural foot down, so it is necessary to shift the foot back and forth a little, and the seat is a little wider than usual.

To be honest, I thought it was just a scrambler machine that focused on the atmosphere and appearance, but it had a serious seat height with the intention of being used for serious off-road riding!

I was surprised when my heels floated.

Riding Reviews

I am not a motorcycle journalist, but just a writer who likes touring motorcycles, so I do not intend to talk about torque, traction, or the feeling of the tires on the ground (or rather, I don't know).

I'm not going to talk about torque, traction, or how the tires feel on the ground (I don't even know)!

What? Is it a Honda motorcycle or a CB400? Is it a training vehicle? It is so easy to ride that I can start, accelerate, corner, stop, make a U-turn, etc., etc., as if it were the same bike I had been riding until yesterday, without any problem at all!

I live in the countryside of Hokkaido, so I am usually away from traffic lights, traffic jams, one-way streets, left-turn/right-turn lanes, etc. But even though I was suddenly thrown out onto the trap-filled streets of Tokyo (from a countryman's perspective), I was able to return safely because it was genuinely easy to ride.

20240129_triumph_33.webp

I was surprised at how easy it was to ride (Speed 400).

The engine, which I expected to have a gentle English gentlemanly feel, was surprisingly aggressive, and although it was not in any way idiosyncratic, it gave me a strong sense of riding a motorcycle!

The bike has a lot of power to move the body forward, and I could feel its power even when I was just riding along the roads in Tokyo!

Even when riding on a straight road that extends to the horizon in Hokkaido, I don't think I would feel any stress due to lack of power.

In addition, the bar-end mirrors of the Speed 400 are very easy to see, which is reassuring when riding in Tokyo, where you always need to be aware of your surroundings.

By the way, as for the Scrambler 400X, the high seat height is directly connected to the good view, and I felt as if I was riding my own GS, so I think riders who usually ride adventure or off-road bikes like me can easily get used to it!

20240129_triumph_32.webp

I felt as if I was riding a GS (Scrambler 400X).

Last but not least. Actually cosmetically good!

Anyway, it looks stylish, has enough power to meet your needs, and is extremely easy to drive! And they come in two different styles, but they are foreign cars, so they must be expensive, right?

The Speed 400 is priced at 699,000 yen and the Scrambler 400X at 789,000 yen!

However, both machines do not look cheap at all, and as I mentioned at the beginning of this article, they have a very good quality feel to them.

So, if you are interested in a Triumph that can be ridden with a standard motorcycle license, we recommend that you visit your local dealer and take a look at the actual bikes!

It was a very good machine!
