From the Webike Community's My Bike, the "Owner Review Summary" introduces various motorcycles based on the voices of owners who actually ride or have ridden them. This time, here's what the owners have to say about HONDA「400X」.
To be honest, HONDA "400X" is this kind of bike!
In addition to the 400X, Honda has several other models with the "X" in their name: the NC750X, the VFR800X CrossRunner (discontinued), and the VFR1200X (discontinued).
The "X" stands for the concept of crossover, meaning that an on-road bike "crosses over" an off-road bike.
However, the 400X introduced here is unique among the "X" series models. This is because, although the "X" series models have an "off-road bike or adventure bike atmosphere," there have been no models that have been claimed to be capable of "dirt riding" in terms of performance. The "X" series bikes have an "off-road" or "adventure bike" feel to them.
When the 400X was introduced in 2013, it was an on-road bike like the other "X" series bikes.
It was positioned as a sibling model of the CB400F (discontinued) and CBR400R, which shared the same engine and chassis, and was also positioned as a tourer with the feel of an adventure model, with front and rear 17-inch wheels like its brothers.
The turning point for the 400X came with the 2019 model change. A new 19-inch size front wheel was adopted. The handlebars also feature a tapered bar handle for better control, making it an "adventure model" that can handle off-road riding not only in terms of style but also in terms of performance.
Later, with the 2022 model change, the 400X changed its specifications from the previous upright front fork and single disc to an inverted fork with a 41mm inner tube diameter and double disc. It has evolved into a sportier chassis.
The key to choosing a 400X is the difference in specifications due to the 2019 and 2022 model changes in this area. In any case, since the 400X in 2013, no long-touring model has appeared in the 400cc class that can compete with the 400X.

Data as of December 6, 2023
Average owner satisfaction is 4.10 out of 5 (362 people rated)
It should be noted that the average satisfaction rating exceeded 4 points.
The three points that received the highest scores were fuel efficiency, riding performance, and looks, and the vehicle's all-around performance, from touring to everyday use, seems to have been well received.
On the other hand, the lowest evaluation was for maintainability. The disadvantages related to maintenance included the difficulty of attaching and detaching the seat, and the need to remove the cowl for even minor maintenance.
400X, Quick Summary
Advantage
- Really just right in terms of design, driving, body size, and ease of use
- Long cruising range thanks to good fuel economy and a large fuel tank
- The throttle and clutch are both light to the touch, making it easy to handle without getting tired.
- No pain in the buttocks after sitting all day
Disadvantage
- Suspension stroke feels insufficient to take it into the dirt
- Headlight area looks too plasticky and cheap
- Difficult to install the seat
- Headlight optical axis is quite high, even stock, and tends to get passed by oncoming traffic (~2021?)
400X Owner's Voice
Here are some of the most impressive voices among the many reviews.
Nagahama (2022 Model)
Motive for purchase, intended use, and comparative models | My previous vehicle (400X/2019) broke down. |
---|---|
Advantages/Satisfactory points | Riding posture is not tiring. I feel it is easier to turn than the previous model. Fuel economy is roughly 38 km/L to 42km/L. The 2019 model has never dropped to the manufacturer's published WMTC mode fuel economy (I expect the 2022 model to be the same since it has the same engine). |
Disadvantages/Dissatisfactory points | Difficult to install the seat. It has been that way since the first model. There is a trick. The grab rails don't seem to work for belt attachment when loading the seat back (the easier they are to grip, the less likely they are to snag the belt). |
Advice for prospective buyers | I have not experienced any machine problems. We tried to change the engine oil regularly, but I think this is general, not limited to this type of motorcycle. |
Ryōtōdzukai no dokushin oyaji (2023 Model)
Motive for purchase, intended use, and comparative models | Love at first sight with inverted front suspension |
---|---|
Advantages/Satisfactory points | The horsepower and torque are easy enough to handle for touring mainly at high speeds and feel more than the numbers. The throttle and clutch are light to the touch and easy to handle with little fatigue. I think the two-tone, blue line and inverted gold are well-balanced. |
Disadvantages/Dissatisfactory points | A suspension stroke is not enough to take the bike into the dirt. If it had 50mm more stroke, it would be more aggressive to take it to the dirt. It would be great if spoke wheels were available as an option, but I think it is not possible due to cost. |
Advice for prospective buyers | Returners, beginners, and veterans. I think it is a well-made bike that anyone can handle easily. Except for riders who don't like the design and size, I have no complaints about buying this bike. |
Makkoi (2021 Model)
Motive for purchase, intended use, and comparative models | Delivered on 10/11/2021 I decided to get a license and buy a motorcycle because I wanted to ride a bike that I could take on light forest roads and go on long trips, and compared 400X, Versys 250, and G310GS. |
---|---|
Advantages/Satisfactory points | On downhill roads, it can cruise at 60 km/h in 5th gear at 4000 rpm or less, with plenty of room for acceleration and deceleration. On highways, the fuel consumption drops dramatically, but you can cruise at 100km/h with a little more room to spare. The stability at any speed and the engine's high torque makes it easy to ride and naturally increase the distance. It is easy to ride because it is stable on any road surface. The headlights are bright and easy to drive on level ground at night, and the fog lights, a factory-installed option, are as bright as a car's if turned on. |
Disadvantages/Dissatisfactory points | The headlight shaft is very high even with the stock headlights, so oncoming cars tend to pass by, and the fog light switch, which is too bright to wear in an environment with oncoming motorcycles, is located under the meter and cannot be turned on and off frequently. The rear inner fender does not exist in the factory model, and the external one seems to be too delicate, but when the road surface is wet or when riding on dirt roads, the rear suspension area becomes a big mess. There are two screen heights, but changing them is quite a hassle because you have to pull out four bolts, remove the screen, and then pull out four more bolts from the stay. Bugs sometimes get inside the cowl and get caught in the ducts, making it hard to clean. |
Sakura-Wing (2020 Model)
Motive for purchase, intended use, and comparative models | There are not many choices for 400cc class motorcycles. I hesitated between CB400SF and 400x, but I bought 400x which is not seen so often. I wanted to install a rear box for daily use, so I wondered if the CB400SF would look good. That is the reason why I did not choose it. By the way, I was only thinking of Honda vehicles. |
---|---|
Advantages/Satisfactory points | Riding posture is easy The purpose is to add a rear box, so it's not too different from the bike I am satisfied with the capacity as I have now added smaller side bags |
Disadvantages/Dissatisfactory points | LED headlight optical axis seems too high LED headlights look bright but are very dark in real life The OEM handlebar guard interferes with the Givi screen It would be nice if the handlebars were a little further forward, but there is no room for cables The rear fender should be installed as standard equipment (or expensive but OEM option?) Changing plugs is a pain (not enough space for everything) There is no space to mount the car. |
Advice for prospective buyers | I would recommend increasing the light intensity with fog. Rear fenders are also a good idea. Seat bag vs. top box is much easier for riders with short legs, including me, who are not confident about getting in and out of the motorcycle. |
Check out 400X's competitors
Since its introduction in 2013, the 400X has evolved in its unique way with major specification changes for 2019 and 2022, but when it comes to rivals, siblings with the same engine and chassis are still the candidates.
The real names are CB400F and CBR400R, but as of 2023, the CB400F has already been discontinued and only the CBR400R is available as a new vehicle.
The CBR400R and 400X have the same 180-degree parallel-twin engine, but the 2019 model change features the same assisted-slipper clutch, but the engine power characteristics of both models have been changed, with the CBR400R having a more throttle-responsive The CBR400R have a more throttle-responsive power output. The 400X has a FI setting that allows the engine pulse to be felt more in the low-mid RPM range.
The engines are of the same family but have evolved to have output characteristics that match their respective characters.
