Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. will sequentially release nine models of the YZ series for motocross competition in 2024 starting October 20. Each model features the common concept of a big logo with linear horizontal movement and a coloring that emphasizes a racy atmosphere by harmonizing three different blue colors.
The YZ250F has undergone minor changes based on the concept of "Synchronization YZ with every MX racer" and incorporates the latest YZ450F technology. The main changes are
(1) An engine with improved mid-range and high-speed performance in addition to excellent low- and mid-range performance,
(2) A specially tuned engine suspension and a bilateral beam frame that allows the engine to feel more integrated with the chassis,
(3) A lightweight, compact body that takes airflow management and freedom of action into consideration,
4) Specially tuned front and rear suspension, and 5) Upgraded Power Tuner application for easier setting.
The "50th Anniversary Edition" of the "YZ250F" and "YZ125" will go on sale on December 20 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of YZ.
Reservations will be accepted at authorized Yamaha Off-Road Competition Model dealers from August 30 to December 3, 2023 (until September 30 for the "50th Anniversary Edition").
If reservations exceed the production plan, the acceptance of reservations may be terminated before the end of the reservation period.
Main Features of the 2024 YZ250F
Engine with improved performance in the mid-to high-speed range, in addition to its excellent low-mid range holdup
A new rear ducted cleaner box with improved intake efficiency, a new cam chain that both "reduces friction loss" and "contributes to fatigue strength," and a new ECU with new mapping of fuel injection (FI) and ignition timing (IG) are adopted. As a result, the conventional engine characteristics of "easy-to-manage power characteristics" and "powerful torque" in the low to mid-speed range have been retained, while performance in the mid-to-high-speed range, including over-revving characteristics, has been improved.
Bilateral beam frame with engine suspension tuned specifically for a more integrated feeling with the car body
The same bilateral beam frame as the "YZ450F" is adopted. Focusing on the frame flex characteristics, which exhibit slight lateral behavior due to the impact of bumps, the frame was designed and developed by carefully balancing the tank rail ring shape, retention shape, reinforcements, etc., and was then subjected to sensory evaluations. In addition, the shape and material of the engine suspension were specially designed, and the bolts on the front side suspension are now through bolts instead of the conventional individual bolts on each side.
These changes improve bump absorption, make it easier to enter a corner while maintaining speed, and allow the rider more freedom of line when cornering.
Lightweight and compact body for airflow management and freedom of action
The same airflow management as on the YZ450F is employed. The air intake layout in front of the cylinder is retained, but the air intake paths are located "between the side cover and tank" and "under the main seat". This optimized air intake path contributes to linear response and improved drivability.
It also contributes to a lighter and slimmer intake area. The shrouds are 50 mm wider and more compact than before, and the seamless treatment of the body exterior allows the rider to move easily on the seat, enabling performance that is integrated with the vehicle.
The seat is flattened by 15 mm from the conventional top surface height difference to increase the freedom of action. A slight stopper shape is woven into the back of the seat to provide a better hold during acceleration.
The riding position has also been redesigned. The footpeg is 5 mm lower, the distance between hip and foot is 10 mm larger, and the handlebars are one pipe position closer to the front, making it easier to achieve a natural riding posture.
Specially tuned front and rear suspension
The front and rear suspension damping characteristics are set to improve traction and bump absorption performance. The front suspension is equipped with a hand-operated pressure damping adjuster that allows pressure damping adjustment without the need for tools.
The new "How to Deal with Suspension Setting Themes" function of the Power Tuner application also facilitates adjustment work. In addition, a reinforced dust seal is adopted to prevent inner tube surface deterioration. The lip length has been increased to prevent dust from entering the inner tube and reduce the risk of oil seepage.
Upgraded power tuner for easier setting
The Power Tuner, an application that allows users to make engine settings with a smartphone, has been upgraded and the following functions have been added.
- Simple Tuning" allows intuitive adjustment of fuel injection and ignition timing by selecting the "Smooth or Aggressive" display on the application.
- Traction Control" with three levels of intervention
- Launch Control" with an additional "rev limit function" at the start
- Lap time measurement function" for numerical confirmation of setting effects and lap time displacement in actual races
YZ 50th Anniversary Color
The 50th anniversary color of YZ is adopted as the second color.
The 50-year history of the YZ, born in 1974, is a trail of challenges and a history of racing.
The 1993 "YZ125/250" pays homage to one of the models that symbolizes Yamaha's enthusiasm. This was the eve of the birth of the 4-stroke YZ, the transitional period leading to the birth of "Yamaha Blue," and the starting point for the latest YZs of the 21st century.
By adopting the coloring of such a period, the new YZ expresses the unique and original worldview of YZ.
