Maco Racing Team’s 10th place among the Formula EWC contenders in round two of the 2023 FIM Endurance World Championship meant it left Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps with its potential unfulfilled.

That’s the firm view of Martin Kuzma, who owns the Slovakia-based, Yamaha-powered outfit, which completed the second running of the 24H SPA EWC Motos in 19th overall following a high-speed crash.

He said: Anthony West, who usually starts the races for us, was absent because of a clashing event in Australia so Bálint Kovács started the race for the first time in his career.

We gradually moved forward and at the first pit stop we were already in 12th place. We continued as planned, our goal was to finish in the top five, but a high-speed crash ended our efforts.

Bálint ended up in the medical centre, the motorcycle was brought to the pit after almost an hour and it took another hour to repair it. So the scenario from Le Mans was repeated, we continued with two riders, Enzo Boulom and [newcomer] Martin Vugrinec took turns on the bike. After Bálint's release from the hospital, he was not allowed to ride until eight o'clock in the morning.

The goal was to get points for the EWC classification and in the end it was 19th place [overall] and 10th in the EWC class. Our team has a lot of potential, but we need more luck in the race.

Once again, I have to thank the entire team, who did a 110 per cent job in difficult conditions, mechanics, riders, masseurs... I also thank team manager Denise Grešková, who has supported us for so many years, and also our partners and fans, who still believe in us.
