Race-Ready and Street-Savvy: SUZUKI GSX-R1000R Custom by TG-RUN

TG-RUN's GSX-R1000R

Customized GSX-R1000R

Technical Garage RUN (TG-RUN) sells new models of the GSX-R series as an authorized Suzuki dealer, as well as many "Complete Upgrade" custom models, including oil-cooled machines, and high-quality used bikes as well. The GSX-R is truly a central part of the business. The shop's representative, Mr. Sugimoto, owns this GSX-R1000R L7 along with a current Hayabusa and many other bikes, and he himself requested TG-RUN to build him a complete custom using this bike.

From the way he uses it, we can get a glimpse of what goes into their work on GSX-R series bikes. First of all, the amount of time this machine is ridden is very high. Last year, it was being used all year long, including during the bitter cold season. To see what riding the GSX-R is like for the customers, he participates in between 10 to 20 track days a year, and joins in lessons run by Aoki Factory Coaching, which TG-RUN is the point of contact for. There are many sessions where he will ride along with the participants being led by the the coach, former GP rider Nobuatsu Aoki. While he spends a lot of time on the track, he also rides on the street. He does it to check the conditions that customers ride in, but also for fun. He is often asked to evaluate tires, oil, and other parts, and so he rides even more.

"Nowadays, the track is the place where you can fully enjoy the performance of a sport bike, so we want to make sure the bike has safe and secure controls. On the other hand, racing is not all there is to a sport bike, that would be a racer. The GSX-R is a production model, so it's going to be ridden liesurely on the streets as well, and it won't be any good if it can't do that. All the GSX-Rs of past generations are fun and easy to ride on the street. They are actually light and compact, and they have a lot of torque. The riding position is also not too tight. Conversely, the 1000cc models of past generations can reach 300km/h even in stock form. It really is a great bike. Therefore, we can't cut corners either. We have top racing riders serving as advisors for TG-RUN. They teach us about racing conditions and pushing the limits that we have no way of knowing about ourselves. Their advice is indispensable for us to create safe, enjoyable and comfortable sport machines. With our machines, they can ride at full racing speed on the track, and there are some things that can only be seen through that high-end riding. The advice we get there, including the performance evaluation of installed parts, is used to provide correct feedback for our own customer's bikes. Of course, these are not competition machines, so we are talking about making them the best they can be for the street as well," says Mr. Sugimoto.

For this reason, the Complete Upgrade customs by TG-RUN do include lighter and higher quality parts, but more importantly focus on the aspect of quality in the way each part is assembled, set up, functions, and is operated.

"We use Brembo Racing brake systems, Marchesini forged wheels, and Ohlins shocks. We use these three brands because they can handle any situation, whether on the track or in town. They have a wide range of settings and can contribute greatly to safety. Comfort is conversely more important for riding on the street and precise control is just as necessary as in a race. We don't choose parts just because they are made for racing, or they are a certain brand, but because it is important that these parts have those advantages. On the other hand, we also create original parts when they are necessary. For the step, position is important, but it is also necessary to reduce deflection, creating a more direct feel when turning the bike. We chose to make it billet because we wanted that strength. The top bridge and stem kit are also made to transmit the input to the bike correctly. As I mentioned earlier, the bike is not lacking in the stock form. The manufacturer (Suzuki) understands what is necessary, and they put the stock bike together by making the best compromise for as many people and situations as possible. But if we want the input to be more accurate, we need these parts. At Aoki Factory Coaching, they teach you to actively steer the handlebar in the direction you want to go. Not using self-steering, but really turning it yourself. That's where these parts are necessary. We package together and set up such necessities to suit the customer's needs, and that's how Complete Upgrade customs are built,” says Sugimoto.

Originally, Suzuki's racer replicas were created from the viewpoint of wanting as many riders as possible to experience the high performance of GP machines. The GSX-R1000R is a racer replica that offers responsive street riding, good turning, and firm stopping, and TG-RUN has taken those characteristics and applied them to each rider's riding style and experience to get the most out of the bike. This GSX-R1000R Complete Upgrade is a great example of this.
