Unwind with a Timeless Spirit: YAMAHA SR400 Custom

Webike's Opinion

Here is a "YAMAHA SR400" custom by Webike community user "SR400FI". The owner has always been drawn to off-road motorcycles, believing that the true joy of riding comes from feeling in control of the machine. However, over time, he found himself wanting a more relaxed touring experience rather than the intense, rugged rides of off-road trails. This led him to switch from his WR250R to the SR400, a bike he had long dreamed of riding since he was 16. Riding the SR400 offers a soothing ride, allowing him to enjoy the journey at a slower, more deliberate pace. He also finds its quiet, nostalgic style to be one of its greatest charms. In terms of performance, the bike handles highways well up to around 100km/h, but beyond that, it requires a bit more attention. Still, he appreciates its refined vintage aesthetic, so it’s not something he considers a drawback.

For the exhaust, he opted for the OVER RACING SS Megaphone Exhaust, which delivers a torquey takeoff and smooth low-to-mid-range acceleration. “It has a relatively quiet idle, but once you’re moving, it produces that crisp, deep, single-cylinder tone, perfectly matching the SR’s character,” he says. The Peyton Place Ariel-style Handlebars lower the grip position, improving both comfort and aesthetics—a win-win. To enhance durability and style, he replaced the stock fenders with DAYTONA stainless steel ones. Unlike the stock fenders, which are prone to rusting on the inside, these require no such concerns. Their slimmer, more streamlined design also enhances the bike's refined look.

One of his favorite upgrades is the RAPiD BIKE EASY Kit, which was, as the name suggests, easy to install. The most noticeable improvement is in acceleration. When upshifting and releasing the clutch, the bike now accelerates more powerfully. The rear suspension, however, was the one component that disappointed him the most after switching to the SR. The stock setup felt outdated and lacking in responsiveness, so he replaced it with DAYTONA adjustable rear shocks. This upgrade eliminated the harsh, springy feel of the old suspension, providing much better damping performance. The ride is now more stable, with no sudden bottoming out, making this one of his most highly recommended modifications.
