Crafting a Track-Ready Masterpiece: Yamaha YZF-R6 Custom

 11 min read

@synergist_'s YZF-R6

Here is a 2020 Yamaha YZF-R6 by @synergist_. He is building it to be the perfect track toy. He wanted to take a bike that he sees as one of the best sportbike platforms and make it even better while keeping it pretty enough to be featured in a show. This custom started off as a wager with a friend of his who had one of his favorite R6 builds. Unfortunately that friend passed away shortly after the bet was made, so he has decided to finish this bike in his honor.

The engine is mostly untouched aside from an STM slipper clutch and Woodcraft case covers, and the intake has been increased using a race intake from Carbonin. To get a refined exhaust note, he decided to go with the Akrapovic EVO titanium exhaust system. Loud enough to be heard, but it sounds so good that it could be in a symphony. When it comes to getting the bike stopped, a 19x18 CNC master cylinder and CNC P4 34/34 4-pad calipers from Brembo are connected by Fren Tubo Type 3 brake lines. When paired with the 6mm thick 320mm floating rotors from Braketech, it is easy to confidently enter a turn while 1-finger braking. To use the rear brake, there are a few different options. You can either use the thumb paddle on the Racemode Parts thumb brake system or the foot brake, thanks to a 2-way master cylinder from IMA. Either option is great considering the underslung Brembo CNC caliper and Braketech floating rear rotor provide more than enough stopping power. The cockpit consists of a custom machined top triple clamp and clip-ons by Racemode Parts. To help the rider stay planted on the bike, Attack Performance rearsets are used, as they give plenty of grip and adjustability. For the street, the bike was outfitted with forged carbon bodywork from RPM Carbon. Now, for the track, it is kept safe by Pascal Plast avio fiber bodywork, but the owner is planning to switch this out for Carbonin carbon fiber bodywork soon. Some other things to note include the massive amount of titanium bolts that hold the bike together and the custom taillight he has developed to mimic the Attack Performace R1 taillight.

Handle

The handlebar is a Racemode Parts zero degree clip-on with a top triple clamp. Button switches from JetPrime and Woodcraft are attached. The steering is kept straight with a blackline Ohlins steering damper.

Electrical

The bike is equipped with a quickshifter and autoblipper from FlashTune ECU. Plans are in the making to install a Starlane DaVinci digital dash soon.

Bodyworks

The bodywork for street use was full forged carbon from RPM Carbon. The bike currently sports race use bodywork from Pascal Plast, as well as a Pascal Plast Race Seat. The owner plans to switch to Carbonin carbon race bodywork in the near future.

Many titanium bolts from ProBolt and carbon winglets from GP Carbon Winglet are used. The bodywork is wrapped in Tinybot Vinyl. A custom superbike style taillight has been installed, as well as a Robem Engineering subframe, and Speedcell lithium battery with battery shutoff switch.

Engine

The engine is mostly untouched. It uses an STM slipper clutch and is kept lubricated by Motul 300 v2 10w50. The OEM case covers were replaced with Woodcraft case covers. It uses a Carbonin race intake to pull in more air than OEM and is filtered using a Sprint P08-F1.

Intake & Exhaust

It is equipped with a full Akrapovic EVO titanium exhaust system and uses a Carbonin race intake to pull in more air than OEM and is filtered using a Sprint P08-F1.

Chassis

The frame and swingarm are kept protected by carbon frame covers from RPM Carbon.

The front brakes consist of a Brembo CNC 19x18 master cylinder, Brembo CNC P4 34/34 4-pad calipers, and Type 3 brake lines from Fren Tubo. For the rear, a Racemode Parts thumb brake with 2-way IMA master cylinder is equipped. The rear caliper is a Brembo CNC P2. Both front and rear use Ferodo XRAC brake pads and Braketech floating rotors.

The wheels are currently OEM, but have captive spacers from Fast Frank Racing. Superlite sprockets have been installed, along with an EK 3D chain converted to 520.

Gas charged Ohlins FKR cartridges have been installed in the front, and a TTX GP shock for the rear.

Attack Performance rearsets with excellent grip and adjustability.
