Ravishing in Red: SUZUKI GSX-R1000 Custom by Shabon Dama

Shabon Dama's GSX-R1000

While the stroke was increased from 988cc to a full-scale 999cc, the K5 ('05 model) GSX-R1000 was made for the rider to fit comfortably without feeling the liter class size by making the frame more compact and changing the reinforcement from two beams to one. Among the GSX-R1000 series models, the K5 is highly regarded for its strength and flexibility in the low and mid RPM range while maintaining high RPM performance. It was the basis for the current GSX-S series, including the KATANA, and 180,000 units of models equipped with the K5 engine were produced by the beginning of 2012. This custom uses that GSX-R1000 K5 as the base and has been modified by Shabon Dama. While the typical K5 red and black colors, exterior, and overall form were kept intact, a look at the parts installed in various places reveals some solid choices.

The front forks are still inverted, but are now OHLINS, and the rear shocks were also changed to OHLINS for better operation. The step has been replaced with a machined step from AGRAS, which is known to have high rigidity and good input performance. Brembo brake calipers were also installed. The wheels, which at a glance look like stock wheels (though the stock wheels are 3-spoke), are BST's Dry Carbon 5-spoke Diamond TEK. Clear red coat has been added on top of the carbon material to match the red body color of the bike, which is a finishing touch that is typical of Shabon Dama, a shop that pays attention to the owner's desire for a special, custom look. The seat was reupholstered and the left and right master cylinders are GALE SPEED Elaborate, improving both comfort and operability. These master cylinders are also Shabon Dama originals (available only at the store), with holes added to the levers and a quick-release pivot pin, making them not only the latest model but also a unique custom part.

In other words, the lightweight and compact nature of the K5 has been brought out even further making the bike easier to handle overall. The parts have been selected and maintained in such a way that even though it is 20 years old, this K5 doesn't look old, you might even say it looks like a newer model, and that's pretty impressive. Shabon Dama's experience in developing parts and running racetrack events has given them the expertise to make the most out of supersport bikes.

Handle

The steering stem and handlebar are stock K5, and the radial pump left and right master cylinders are GALE SPEED Elaborate with Shabon Dama original customizations including quick release pivots and holes in the levers. You can see that the black and red logo also matches the body color of the bike.

Bodyworks

The exterior remains stock GSX-R1000 K5, including the red and black paintjob and mirrors. The windshield has been replaced with a clear ZERO GRAVITY Double Bubble.

The single seat cover is a K5 stock option. The seat itself has been reupholstered and the cushioning has been replaced to improve control.

Engine

The φ73.4 x 59mm, 999cc engine, 32-bit ECU, and other electrical and cooling systems are stock GSX-R1000 K5. The aluminum twin-spar frame is also K5 stock.

Chassis

The steps are black machined aluminum from AGRAS for a direct input feel. Duracon is inserted at the tips of the bars.

The front forks remain inverted, the same as stock, but are replaced with OHLINS. The front brakes are equipped with Brembo CNC 4-piston Calipers with red finish.

The rear brakes are K5 stock. The exhaust, which was titanium with a single silencer as stock, was replaced with a full titanium 4-1, dual silencer exhaust by OHNISHI HEAT MAGIC, giving the bike a unique look.

The swingarm is also stock and is paired with K5 compatible Ohlins SU503 shocks. The front and rear wheels are BST Carbon Diamond TEK 3.50-17/6.00-17 with clear red on a carbon base. The drive chain is an EK/530ZVX, also red. The overall color scheme is worth checking out.
