Original Cowl Bracket & Short Tail: Yamaha VMAX Custom

 6 min read

Esper's V-MAX 1680

In response to the owner's request to install a cowl and create a super short, modern-looking tail, Custom Shop Esper built this VMAX custom. Originally, the VMAX could not have a cowl attached, so the shop proceeded with the customization using one-off brackets. As you can see, the cowl is a voluminous half-type, but after it was installed and tested at high speed riding, there was a problem of intense vibration and shaking. The shop managed to balance the brackets and made multiple adjustments to achieve this form. Esper's amazing work securing steering angle and wind resistance is a result of such struggles.

The tail is a stock part of the Ducati Monster, which was attached by cutting the seat rail. Although there is a fuel filler on the VMAX, it seems to be creating a better look. They also made a one-off titanium silencer and widened the rear tire to 240mm. While the engine remains stock, they focused on custom parts for the bodyworks and exhaust system. The VMAX owner runs a curry shop, and he is now uses the bike to transport lemons, onions, and carrots in the space between the sturdy brackets.

Bodyworks

The cowl the owner brought is made of FRP, and Esper original brackets are custom made with a steel base. By tightening both sides of the left and right engine hangers to their respective frame and engine, balance was achieved while preventing vibration, and the maximum lean angle was ensured.

The space created by installing the cowl between the gauges and headlight can be safely used as storage space without any interference.

On the rear, the seat rail has been cut and a Ducati cowl has been installed. When opened, the fuel filler opening is exposed.

Handle

The gauges are stock, and vintage rubber grips have been installed to suit the owner's personal preference. The mirrors are mounted on the cowl bracket.

Engine

The water-cooled 1670cc V4 engine with a 65-degree bank angle is stock. Fuel adjustment is carried out using a Power Commander V unit in response to changes in the exhaust system, and a quick shifter is also installed. Additionally, the clutch cover has been skeletonized, which is another characteristic feature of the engine.

The aluminum diamond-type frame and rearsets are stock. Above and below the engine hanger mountings, which suspend the engine between the V-banks, you can see the cowl bracket bases are routed in a natural way.

When one hears of Esper's VMAX, one tends to think that it is turbocharged, whether 1200 or 1700, but this custom has been customized with a naturally aspirated engine.

Intake & Exhaust

The exhaust system consists of a one-off 4-1 titanium exhaust with a single right-handed silencer.

Chassis

The Φ52mm inner tube front forks, 3.50-18 size front wheels, and 6-piston brake calipers are stock.

The rear wheel is a US-spec VMAX's wide type, with a size of 8.00-18 inches. The tire was also replaced with a wider 240/40 size. The swingarm is stock.
