Building Better: HONDA CB750F Custom by YASUDA SHOKAI
YASUDA SHOKAI's CB750F
"For this CB750F we were originally going to prepare a bike to be the base, but the owner found one first and brought it to us, so we built this custom using that one," says Mr. Yasuda of YASUDA SHOKAI. Looking at the overall finish in the North American spec '82 FC Spencer color, it is hard to imagine the condition the bike was in when it arrived at the shop, but it is not difficult to imagine the work that went into restoring it.
"The original was in shambles. The engine was leaking oil, so we fixed that first. We had to make sure the bike could run without any worries. The frame had some strange laydown work done to it, so we put it back together and made it look right. We also completely rebuilt the suspension and touched up the exterior," said Yasuda.
The bike has been converted to 17-inch front and rear along with black Ohlins RWU front forks and a black stem for 17-inch. The swingarm was also replaced and the wheels changed to GALE SPEED Type-GP1S. The yellow spring Ohlins Grand Twin shocks also accentuate the look of the bike.
"We started with the suspension and wheels, that way, along with the frame that we had to fix at first, we could get all of the big work out of the way, so there wouldn't be any worries about riding the bike. From there we could just replace consumable parts as usual. As for the engine, as mentioned above, we had to fix the oil leak, which we discovered was caused by defective sealing around the stud bolt at the back of the cylinder, where you have an O-ring for the CB750FZ, FA, and FB. There is room for more work, specifically overhauling the engine and modifying the exhaust, but that is a topic for the future. We could just build it all at once, which is also fun, but for this bike, we are going with a step by step approach to enjoy customizing it over a longer period of time."
If you have an idea of what you want to do in the future, this method of getting the big things out of the way first is certainly a good idea, and you can change the setup, tires, and so on when you work on the engine. In addition to the aforementioned modifications, the stem is an original YASUDA SHOKAI product that can be used to mount XJR1200 φ43mm front forks, which are a good choice when changing the CB-F to 17-inch front and rear. A mounting bracket for the CB-F stock guages is also included, as well as an adapter that allows the headlight to be moved forward slightly while still being able to use the CB-F stock bracket as well. The front forks are the above mentioned φ43mm unit for higher quality, which are balanced with an XJR machined aluminum swingarm. This is a solid method for 17-inch conversion, of which YASUDA SHOKAI has plenty of experience in.
There are plans to install the popular YASUDA SHOKAI original hand-bent 4-1 exhaust (compatible with the stock step and can be used with aftermarket steps with an optional high-mount tailpipe), so the future specs are also in sight. Of course, there is the option of enjoying it as is, but there is also the option of taking it to the next level. With a solid build like this, your customization opportunities are endless.
Handle
YASUDA SHOKAI's original stem kit for 17-inch and φ43mm front forks is equipped. The handlebars are EFFEX, and the front master cylinder and hydraulically driven clutch master cylinder are NISSIN Radial. The meters/headlight are stock, and a YOSHIMURA Digital Multimeter has been added.
Bodyworks
The exterior is done in North American CB750FC colors, known as the Spencer color. The seat has also been redesigned using the stock seat as a base.
Engine
The engine is the stock CB750F engine which was taken down and reloaded after fixing the oil leak. A METAL GEAR WORKS Hydraulic Clutch Kit and Sprocket Covers, OVER Racing sliders, and a round oil cooler were also added. The steps are by OVER Racing.
The carburetor is an FCR φ35mm with K&N filters. Mr. Yasuda recommends that even racing carburetors be checked and replaced with new ones at regular intervals (5 or 10 years) to get them back in good shape.
Intake & Exhaust
The bike is currently equipped with a Xess megaphone type exhaust made by MIZUNO MOTOR.
Chassis
The front forks are Ohlins RWU with ø43mm inner tubes, and the front brakes are a combination of Brembo P4-40C calipers and SUNSTAR Premium Racing discs.
The front and rear wheels are GALE SPEED Type-GP1S in 3.50-17/6.00-17 sizes. The tires are Pirelli Diablo Rosso III, which are said to have a good balance of life and grip. The rear tire has an aspect ratio of 60 to provide air volume, and the sizes are 120/70ZR17 front and 180/60ZR17 rear.
The rear brakes use a Brembo P2-RS84 caliper + SUNSTAR Premium Racing disc. The aluminum swingarm is a modified XJR1200 swingarm, and the rear shocks are Ohlins Legend Twin. The drive chain is an EK 530SRX2.
