Over 120,000km OEM Style Oil-Cooled: GSX-R1100 Custom

 7 min read

JUN SPL.'s GSX-R1100

A slant cowl (a front cowl shape that tilts slightly back) is also a distinctive feature of the GSX-R1100 (M), based on a 1991 oil-cooled motorcycle. The owner, Jun, has been riding this motorcycle for 30 years, but the condition is so good that you wouldn't think he had been riding it for that long just by looking at the photos. This may be due to the fact that he has maintained it without deviating from the theme of lightweight and stock-style customization. The cowl is one of the themes. The owner changed it to a Clever Wolf cowl after he fell during a riding event. The Clever Wolf cowl is similar in shape to the stock cowl, and the stock pattern paint job has also been reproduced to match the bike.

Afterwards, after moving to the Kanto region, the owner overhauled the engine and installed a 1mm oversize forged piston from Wiseco. Even with over 120,000 kilometers of riding, the motorcycle's performance remains excellent. The timing of maintenance and a solid relationship with a reliable custom shop have helped maintain the motorcycle's condition. The next step for this motorcycle custom is to replace the exterior with an '88 SERT (Suzuki Endurance Racing Team) GSX-R750 replica front cowl and a '90-'91 Yoshimura R750-shaped tail cowl to achieve the goal of making it resemble the coveted '88 SERT bike (based on the TTF-1 endurance racing spec).

Bodyworks

The upper cowl (including the headlight and cover) is made by Clever Wolf and uses FRP for the '89-'92 oil-cooled R1100. It is painted in the stock color.

Electrical

Both the speedometer, which displays up to 320 km/h, and the engine tachometer remain stock. The aluminum gauges panel that houses these gauges has a GSX-R emblem, which is one of the reasons why the owner likes this bike so much. An oil temperature gauge has also been added in the upper left corner. The handle and brake section are stock parts and remain in good condition.

Engine

The Φ78x59mm engine has been overhauled two times, and uses Wiseco forged pistons with a 1mm oversize (Φ79mm/1192cc). As camshafts for the 1991 model were not available, the head ASSY was replaced with that of the 1990 model, and a Yoshimura ST-1 cam was installed. The generator cover and pulsar cover are both Yoshimura products. The carburetor is a FCR Φ39mm, and the exhaust system features a US Yoshimura titanium duplex and RS3 silencer installed by Ueno R&D. The aluminum double-cradle frame remains stock.

Chassis

The front forks are OEM Φ41mm inverted forks with WP fork springs. The front brakes have OEM Nissin 4-piston calipers and Sunstar Works expanded discs.

The rear brake is a combination of the stock 2-piston caliper and the stock rigid disc. A JB-Power riding step kit is also installed.

The aluminum swingarm is a stock GSX-R1100M, and the rear shock has been replaced with a PENSKE Racing Shock.
