Let’s Customize Your Brake Calipers! The Best Brembo Caliper Match by Installation Pitch

bremno-1.jpg How to

One of the most confusing things about choosing brake calipers is how to buy and select the right caliper for your vehicle. If all calipers are clearly marked as compatible with the vehicle, you can rest assured, but if you are considering purchasing individual calipers or third party calipers such as Brembo, you cannot say so.

"Will this universal caliper fit on my motorcycle? Will it not?"

In this article, we will be talking about the pitch of the caliper support, which is necessary to install a universal caliper.

Radial mount or axial mount. Which do you prefer?

Before we talk about pitch, let's talk a little about how calipers are mounted. Many people who want to change calipers may do so to ride on the track, to improve performance, or to dress up.

The lineup is as different as the applications. If you want to divide calipers into two main types, you can divide them into radial mount and axial mount. Speaking of radial mounts, they are increasingly being used as genuine equipment on current large-displacement models. On the other hand, the axial mount is still the mainstream for middle class and lower vehicles.

These different mounts have been mentioned in previous article.

No matter which type of mount you choose, the most important factor when selecting a caliper is the mounting pitch. Although there are standard pitches such as 84mm pitch and 108mm pitch, the 108mm pitch, which used to be the mainstream pitch with emphasis on rigidity, is shifting to 100mm pitch as technology advances.

There are many different installation pitches, but which one is the perfect pitch for your motorcycle?

Now about the mounting pitch.

When looking at universal calipers on the web, you will often see "mounting pitch". What is the mounting pitch even though it is universal? You may be worried about whether you can put it on your motorcycle or not.

To begin with, in order to install a universal caliper, the caliper support must also be replaced. The caliper support is the middleman between the front fork and the brake caliper.

The caliper and caliper support will be installed with two bolt-on points, and the distance between the bolt holes of these two points is called the pitch.

The mounting pitch should be selected in accordance with the caliper support.

Now that you know the importance of mounting pitch when choosing calipers and that you need caliper supports, you can start to see the difference. For example, calipers with a "mounting pitch of 40mm" will require a caliper support with a pitch of 40mm.

The caliper support has bolt holes for installation on the fork side and caliper side respectively, and cannot be installed if any of the pitches are different.
The mounting specifications also vary depending on the motorcycle model. Even if the caliper is a universal caliper, it is important to choose a support that is specific to your motorcycle model.

Brembo calipers are often favored as customization. Many teams in MotoGP and other racing fields use Brembo calipers, and some overseas vehicle manufacturers use Brembo calipers as their stock calipers, so Brembo has outstanding performance and reliability. In this case, you should first look for a caliper support that fits your motorcycle, and then choose a Brembo caliper with the corresponding mounting pitch.

When I looked into it, I realized that calipers are very expensive. With their light weight, compactness and high rigidity due to the cutting-edge manufacturing method, it is no wonder that they are expensive. It's also a great way to get the most out of your motorcycle. So I came up with the option of buying them at a used parts store or online auction.

If it's a universal caliper, it's distributed more than a model-specific caliper and it's not a problem. I'm sure many people think this way.

However, there are cases where the installation pitch differs depending on the model, even for the same vehicle. Check carefully if it can be installed in your motorcycle before you consider purchasing it.

In addition, in the worst case, it may be a copy even if the appearance is exactly the same as the real thing. In some cases, the installation pitch is slightly off and the caliper cannot be installed, and even if it can be installed, the technology inside the caliper cannot be reproduced.

In particular, the brake area is called an important safety part. After an accident/injury, it's too late and we recommend you to buy a new one from a reliable shop without thinking twice.
