Reviving the Ignition System of the Old Motorcycle that Degraded in Performance Due to Aging and Deterioration Into Full Power!

Strengthening the ignition system can make a big difference in the riding quality. The difference can be seen in the power of the engine starting performance. Especially in the case of old motorcycles, the power down due to the deterioration of the ignition system is remarkable, and there are not a few cases where starting is difficult and the punch in the low and medium speed range is diminished. It is in such cases that we want to practice ignition system tuning, which boasts a high track record.

Strengthening the ignition system that changes the driving drastically

The Kawasaki Z1 was born out of numerous requests./Full power kit for Z2. SPII full power ignition kit made by AS Uotani which now has a lineup for many old motorcycles. In fact, the driving feeling changes drastically by strengthening the ignition system even in the older model. First of all, please see the model lineup on the web.

The maximum advance angle and rev limit can be set arbitrarily along with the original ignition curve.

High power IG coil for overwhelmingly strong and stable spark

The biggest feature of the AS Utani SPII Full Power Kit is that it has an ignition map specially designed for the model and the maximum advance angle can be set arbitrarily by the notch dial. Furthermore, the rev limit speed can be set as desired, which contributes to increasing the life of the engine. The manufacturer's stock IG coil has a primary resistance of 4 ohms, while the SP II 2P coil has a primary resistance of 0.8 ohms, so the kit increases the discharge voltage and current of the spark plug, and the discharge time is set to be longer. This greatly increases the ignition performance and allows the user to experience a real increase in torque. Standard spark plugs generally have an electrode gap setting of 0.7mm. With this kit, the gap is set at 1.1-1.3mm, which has high ignition power. There are two types of kits: a kit where the user prepares the high-tension cord of their choice and a complete kit.

From point governor to dedicated rotor

To install the parts on the engine side, remove the points cover, and after removing the points base and governor which are tightened inside, fix the special rotor of the kit parts. In addition to the convex protrusions that send signals, the rotor is also clearly marked with the T mark (top mark) that indicates top dead center and the 10 mark (meaning 10 degrees before top dead center) for ignition timing.

After pulling the pickup sensor base to the old point base part, fix the base at the specified position according to the installation instructions. By following the instructions, it is possible to recreate the standard ignition setting. Connect the HRS coupler connector to the stock Kawasaki connector.

The high power ignition coil is tightened into the same mounting position as the stock coil via the included bracket, and the coil coupler of the special harness is connected. The high tension cord was routed the same way as the stock one.

How to connect the high tension cord

After peeling the high-tension cord to the appropriate dimensions (in this case, 12mm exposed core wire and 15mm peeled rubber skin), insert it into the 2P coil mount and fix. It is recommended to use Cemedine "Super X" for the best fixing. After testing various adhesives, Super X was found to have the best adhesion and water resistance. After peeling the high-tensile cord, caulk the special connection hardware and insert it into the coil.

Consideration of the mounting location of the control unit

Remove the drive chain oil tank from the left side cover and install the ignition unit.

I made my own bracket with aluminum plate and fixed it with genuine battery band for other models.

The installation is completed neatly. This layout makes it easy to activate the setting notch.

The control unit of the full power kit was installed in the oil tank space for the drive chain in the side cover. In those days, the drive chain performance was low and the de-rive chain was stretched very much if the maintenance was not done. To fix the control unit, a special bracket was made by bending an aluminum strip, and the bracket was fixed with the mounting bolt of the tank. The bracket is fixed with the mounting bolts on the tank, and the unit is mounted floating with a rubber band. This way, the bracket and band should absorb the vibration.

Spark plug gap adjustment and ignition inspection

Pe16.jpg

Since the ignition power is strong, the spark plug gap is widened (1.1 to 1.3 mm).

Pe17.jpg

Let's check the ignition timing with the timing light.

Before spark test, you should not forget to widen the electrode gap of spark plug. It is very convenient to have the gap gauge at hand. The gap can be widened and the ignition reprimand can be widened by getting the strong ignition. It is fun to change the gap within the adjustment range. When the installation layout is finished, let's connect the power supply wire and the earth wire, and do the spark test. If the ignition can be confirmed, start the engine. Let's adjust the tightening position of the pickup base so that the ignition timing at idling will be 10 degrees before top dead center.

POINT
  • Point 1: Remove the battery terminal before starting the work, and then start the mounting work.
  • Point 2: In the case of a kit for which the high-tension cord is to be arranged by the user, purchase the parts before starting work.
  • Point 3: After completing all the wiring, connect the power supply and perform the spark test before starting the engine.
  • Point 4: Let's check the ignition timing at idling with the timing light, and then set the maximum advance angle a notch.

The world of the used motorcycle that the engine condition becomes bad by the deterioration of the ignition system, and the power feeling is often decreased. From poor starting, to unstable idling, to poor acceleration performance, the decline in engine performance caused by the ignition system is more common than you might think. There are unexpectedly many cases that the engine power is considerably decreased compared with the perfect condition though it was running without knowing or noticing it. In addition, there are many cases that you notice that you can drive more pleasantly than before by "further strengthening" ignition performance though you do not feel any malfunction. It is possible to feel the difference like the one that is noticed when the spark plug that has gone out of tune is replaced with a new plug. It may seem to be exaggerated, but it is the ignition performance that often feels like that in reality.

There is a case that not only an old motorcycle but also a state-of-the-art motorcycle can experience the same. To that extent, the ignition system is something that brings a big influence on engine performance.

The AS Uotani SPII Full Power Kit was first introduced for the first generation air-cooled Z series and has become a very popular product. The rev limit can be set in 500rpm increments, and the mapping can change the maximum advance angle in 2-degree increments, etc. This is a highly functional tuning part, but what old motorcycle fans should pay attention to is the "strength of ignition power". The genuine ignition system of the manufacturer boasts of stable performance certainly, but it does not mean that the ignition power is strong. As a matter of fact, the strength of this ignition power changes the driving of the motorcycle greatly. This is especially true when it comes to acceleration and torque. In general, the spark plug tends to be difficult to ignite during acceleration (i.e., when the engine speed is rising) because of the negative pressure of the intake. When the ignition power is increased under such circumstances, "complete combustion" is promoted, and as a result, the explosive power becomes overwhelmingly strong, and it becomes possible to experience it as an increase in torque. For example, there is a case that it accelerates strongly only by the throttle work without downshifting after the ignition system is strengthened though it used to downshift at the time of the overtaking acceleration when the feeling of the acceleration torque is thin. We would like you to experience "the world of strong ignition" by all means.
