The basic principle of using a screwdriver is to push and turn. If the screw is too tight, you have to use more force to turn it, otherwise, you will strip the cross slot at the head. For screws that are still too tight to turn, the shock driver, which rotates the tip with a hammer blow, is effective. For older motorcycles and questionable-looking screws, this screwdriver will save you trouble if you use it from the start.

Phillips screws, used in conjunction with bolts and nuts, are one of the most basic materials used to hold parts together. In the past, screws started with a slotted screw, but eventually, as screw-turning efficiency improved, the cross-slotted Phillips screw was introduced.

With a Phillips head screw, the groove and the screwdriver can only make contact every 180 degrees, whereas, with a Phillips head screwdriver, all you have to do is turn the screwdriver 90 degrees to fit in the groove. In addition, the cross-shaped screwdriver tapers down towards the tip, so the tip of the screwdriver can easily fit into the cross slot, which speeds up the tightening process.

However, this tapered cruciform groove is also the cause of the ease of stripping the Phillips screw. The phenomenon of a screwdriver trying to rise up along the cruciform groove is called come-out, and in order to compensate for this weakness, the action of pushing and turning the screwdriver has become standard.

If you are not careful or try to turn the screw with the screwdriver at an angle, the cross-slot will widen and the tip of the screwdriver will be difficult to grip, which is called "stripping".

Perhaps because of such a fundamental weakness, modern motorcycles are now using flanged hex bolts for engine crankcase covers, and more and more of the body bolts are hex-hole cap bolts and torque bolts, reducing the number of places to use Phillips screws.

Nevertheless, there are still many Phillips screws in existence and it takes concentration and tension to loosen them up without licking them.

This is a slender type of shock driver with a slender body. This screwdriver is made straight out of a tool shop. It is suitable for use as a shock driver that uses the weight of the hammer itself to give a shock, rather than swinging the hammer and hitting it.

A shock driver is a reliable tool for loosening tight Phillips screws. Sometimes called impact screwdrivers, in both cases, a hammer strikes the back of the grip to force the end of the shaft to rotate by a mechanism inside the grip.

In the case of a camshaft type screwdriver, one end of a pair of diagonally overlapping cams is connected to the shaft and the other end to the grip end. A standard through-driver has a single axle from the tip to the back end, whereas a shock driver is divided into two parts inside the grip.

In the case of a screwdriver with a switchable rotation direction, switching the overlapping camshaft can apply strong force not only in the loosening direction but also in the tightening direction. When loosening a stuck screw, grip the screwdriver and press it against the ground to check the direction of rotation of the bit at the tip.

Then press it against the tightened screw and hit the back of the grip with an iron hammer. At this point, it is effective to strike the screwdriver while twisting it in the direction to loosen it. You need the hammer's blowing power to push the screw, but basically, you need to press the screwdriver itself against the screw.

It's important to hit the hammer with force from the start, as you risk damaging your opponent's parts and the cam may not move smoothly, so it's important to keep an eye on the situation.

Vessel's Mega Dora Impacta is available in tip sizes #2 and #3, and the #2 comes in two different shaft lengths. The grip design is similar to that of a regular penetrating Mega Dora, so you wouldn't think this was a shock driver based on appearance alone.

Regardless of the tool manufacturer, shock screwdrivers have a bare metal grip to withstand blows, and many have a chunky shape and interchangeable tips.

The Mega Dora Impacta from Vessel, a manufacturer, and distributor of hand tools and industrial tools, including screwdrivers, was introduced with the concept of being able to use it for everyday work and also as a shock driver in an emergency and has been very popular.

At first glance, this screwdriver looks like a normal through-and-through screwdriver with a plastic grip and a long shaft, but a cam mechanism inside the grip allows the tip to rotate only about 12 degrees to the left when struck with a hammer.

You may think it's only 12 degrees, but the initial trigger is important to loosen a sticking screw, and once the sticking is released, most of the time it can be loosened with an ordinary screwdriver. On the other hand, if you feel resistance for a long time during the loosening process, the female screw is often damaged and needs to be repaired after the screw is removed.

Another feature of the Mega Dora Impactor is that once the hammer blow resolves the adherence, it can be used as a normal screwdriver. As mentioned above, most shock screwdrivers have the shape and specifications of a shock driver and are not necessarily designed to be used as a normal screwdriver.

However, this screwdriver can be used as an ordinary screwdriver for normal screws, and when you find a stuck screw, you can hit it with a hammer and it will become a shock driver so the work won't be delayed.

The difference between this screwdriver and a standard shock driver is that it only rotates counterclockwise, but it is far more likely to loosen the adhered screws than to retighten them, so you won't have much to complain about. Of course, it is possible to tighten the screw by hand just like a normal screwdriver.

If you're in a situation where the #3 Phillips screw surrounds the perimeter of the cover, such as the clanker case cover on an out-of-print motorcycle, a shot of all the screws beforehand, regardless of whether they stick or not, should make the subsequent loosening process easier.

Even if you already own both a penetrating driver and a shock driver, this is an attractive driver that you'll want to add to your collection.

The Phillips screw on the brake master cylinder cap is a countersunk screw, and if you don't align the screwdriver perfectly with the cross-slot, it can be easily licked, so using a shock driver to create a trigger can prevent problems.

M6 screws with a number 3 cross slot are often used to fix the engine cover, and many out-of-print motorcycles and older motorcycles have them sticking to the engine cover.
