Recently I can't help thinking about the Middle-class 2-cylinder model. HONDA NC750S / X, YAMAHA XSR700 / MT-07, SUZUKI SV650 / V Strom 650, KAWASAKI Z650 / W800, etc. Of course, there are many intermediate displacement models, equipped with a 2-cylinder engine of around 600cc to 900cc, including Japanese, European and US models. There are more than 30 models if i just instantly look back my memory. Recently, I have more opportunities to test ride these classes compare to before, to say there actually are many different kinds of new middle twin that have been brought to the market nowadays.

Middle-class is a big bike

In the past, the only way to ride a big bike in Japan was to obtain a big motorcycle license by taking an exam with a passing rate of only 3%. Moreover, Japan had an upper limit of 750cc for motorcycle before, that's why 750cc motorcycle was a longing for riders, and the rider who rode 750cc was a hero. So, recently, the models from 600㏄ to 900㏄ are called the ”Middle-class”, but it is enough to call that it is a big motorcycle from the old days.

On the other hand, the middle class has been a popular category for a long time in Europe, a country with advanced motorcycle culture. The Middle-class motorcycles were easy to handle and affordable (for Europeans), were cheap, and were relatively inexpensive to maintain. Also, insurance and tax rates are ranked by displacement and output, so they are more cost effective than large displacement models. So, it seems to have matched the values of European general riders who have a lot of rational thinking.

On the other hand, in Europe, only the wealthy people are riding superbikes and premium large displacement models, and there is no one (maybe) who buys it with 120-month loan. To put it the other way around, it may be said that Japan is still a great country for riders, because we can manage to buy and maintain high-end models. I really think so.

Advantages are known by riding

Let's get back on track. The advantage of the middle twin is often noticed when riding. The first thing to notice is the body size and weight. Even people who are not so big can ground their feet, and the weight is about 200kg, so handling is relatively easy. In terms of power, it is mostly in the range of 50 to 80ps. In addition, the two-cylinder engine has a gentle and flat output characteristic features.

The sound and the engine throb are very nice and are very "motorcycle". Although it differs depending on the engine layout, such as the parallel 2-cylinder and the V-twin, the 270-degree crank and the 360-degree crank, each of them is unique. The inline-4 engine's uplifting feeling and high-pitched sound are of course attractive, but you may feel little tired if both physical and mental are not in good conditions.

A friend of ordinary riders

On the other hand, the middle twin is not scary to ride because it has a moderate power and no sudden power increase. I think that there are many elements that ordinary riders can easily fan-to-ride with an ordinary mentality, such as being able to ride with a natural feeling along with modest electronic controls, etc., because it is not too "advanced".

In addition, middle twin have better fuel efficiency than big bikes, and are characterized by a wide range riding from city riding to touring and many practical models. Recently, models that have sophisticated appearances have increased in number, but it is good that the self-consciousness of those models are not too high. It does not hurt your wallet that much so the price is attainable or possibly reachable with the mercy of your wife.

In other words, the middle twin very friendly for us ordinary riders. The middle twin provides you an advantages of a big bike, yet a good partner which rider don't have to stand ready for every ride, but to gives rider a comfort and relaxed riding.
