DIY! How to Periodically Disassemble and Clean the Brake Master Cylinder

The front brake that works well is safe, but when was the last disassembly maintenance?

If the motorcycle has never been disassembled and cleaned since it was newly own, or if several years have passed since the last overhaul maintenance, the braking performance can be maintained by actively disassembling and cleaning the brake master cylinder. The overhaul maintenance can be called a gateway to success in amateur mechanics.

Brake maintenance is always practiced when performing restoration maintenance to the left unused motorcycle in which, the accumulated impurities, damage and wear the brake piston seal. In some cases, the braking performance can be restored just by replacing with the new brake fluid, but the performance life of the brake master cylinder is often prolonged due to regular disassembly and maintenance.

1. The boots condition of the inner piston is especially important.

By controlling the brake lever, the inner piston in the master cylinder operates. Piston boots play an important role in maintaining the workability of the brake caliper piston, also protect the parts from contamination and scratches of the dust.

Remove the piston boots using a thin and sharp pickup tool, but the primary method is to firstly remove the ring that holds the piston boots. However, if the piston boot is likely to be cut when removing the ring, it is better to remove the dust boots first and then remove the ring.

2. Use L-shaped circlip pliers to remove the circlip.

While fixing the brake master cylinder body in a vise, use a screwdriver to push the piston and slowly pull out the circlip with an L-shaped circlip plier to prevent it from blowing off.

The inner piston was pulled out to the brake master cylinder body. The sludge accumulated by the moisture absorption action of the brake fluid was attached around the piston. The piston needs to be clean with a parts cleaner.

3. Complete disassembling is an important rule before repainting the brake master cylinder.

When you want to paint the brake parts, you need to disassemble completely. The ordinary painting can be immediately and softly peeled off due to the strong hygroscopicity of the brake fluid. The high-temperature burning-paint of GUN KOTE with good fluid resistance can be used with confidence. GUN KOTE is also rich in color.

When trying to move the motorcycle that has not been used for a while, there are often cases where the brake is dragging, the operation of the brake lever is awkward, and dragging becomes stronger when the lever is squeezed. In such a case, even when moving the motorcycle, it is better not to use the brake too much. If there is a drag, all the brake-related parts need to be disassembled and maintained, and if necessary, replace the parts with a new one.

To confirm the damage of the inner parts, it is better to perform minimum maintenance in disassembling. It is an essential maintenance work for a comfortable ride. When the brake is dragging, it is better to overhaul the brake caliper. At the same time, the brake master cylinder should be overhauled. Depending on these work practices, there are many cases where the original braking performance is restored as if nothing had happened.

The brake master cylinder was disassembled and maintained, but the most important is the condition of the piston boots. If the rubber boots remain damaged, the brake master cylinder is likely to malfunction due to the contamination of garbage and gravel. If you notice that the piston boots are broken during disassembly, replace them with a new one.

POINT

If you notice a broken or damaged piston boots, don't hesitate to replace it with a new one. If the old piston boots are not damaged when replaced, it is recommended to keep the old piston boots without discarding it. It will be a spare part for future use. When reassembling, be sure to use rubber grease that does not damage rubber parts and enhances friction with the metal parts. General grease cannot be used due to its stickiness.
