MACNA Water-cooled Vests are a Great Way to Get Through the Scorching Heat Season!

coolingvestevo_main.jpg Parts & Gear Reviews

I'm Miya, a member of the Webike staff, who has been getting very tired of the daily motorcycle commute lately due to too high temperatures outside.

The long rainy season is over and the long-awaited motorcycle season should be over, but what we were waiting for was a scorching hot hell. With temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country, there is always the danger of heatstroke for riders who ride their motorcycles in the flesh. The wind that blows while riding is like a hot wind. If this is the case, I recommend a water-cooled vest. Water-cooled vests? What's that? For those of you who are wondering what to do with the MACNA water cooling vest, I'd like to share with you my thoughts on buying and using it!

What is MACNA, anyway?

Born in the Netherlands, MACNA is an up-and-coming riding wear manufacturer founded by seven designers. Many of their products prioritize safety, and their jackets made of a material called "NIGHT EYE" are said to be representative of MACNA.

The reflective fabric is embedded with delicate glass beads that reflect at the slightest light, and at first glance, it looks like an ordinary jacket, but when illuminated by a light, it glows as if it is emitting its own light, making it stand out for riders who ride at night. image2_5cf737f8d3bf7-1.jpg

Cooling Vest Evo

Let's take a look at the products we're going to be reviewing.

It's a vest that has large holes and looks like it's very breathable. This vest is a cooling system that uses "heat of vaporization," which removes heat from the surroundings as water evaporates. What's the key to water? That said, there's a zipper in the back, through which water is poured to power the cooling system by vaporization heat.

There's a reason why there's a zipper in this area: ...... and it's placed so that it won't disrupt the silhouette of the jacket even when it's thin. It's very easy to use and all you need to do is to prepare600ml of water only! Open the zipper part you just used and pour in the water.

After pouring water, you may want to rub it in to spread the water all over. If you spread it out like the picture below and push it out from the back part, the water will be distributed evenly. The feeling of touching it in this state is like a water pillow.

Now you're ready to go! Let's go for a quick ride.

I ran in the hot sun!

  • Date: August 16
  • Route: Tokyo - Mt. Takao - Sagami Lake - Katsunuma
  • Temperature: 35-38°C
  • Upper body equipment: undershirt and mesh jacket

We left Tokyo at 8 a.m. and drove down the road to Katsunuma for three hours. As for this outfit, I'm wearing a cold inner shirt + MACNA Cooling Vest Evo + mesh jacket, in that order. The mesh jacket was a full mesh jacket with the added benefit of ventilation to the cooling vest. The first thing I felt when I started riding was that it got very hot at traffic lights with no cooling effect at all. There was a lot of traffic congestion and waiting at traffic lights, especially on the way out of Tokyo, so we weren't able to get the most out of it.

But through the city. As the signal decreases, the cooling effect of the cooling vest begins to take effect. The less you stop and the more time you spend riding, the more efficiently the wind blows into the vest, cooling the vest and the skin that is in close contact with it with the heat of vaporization. The wind that goes through the vest is cooler than the outside temperature, so it's refreshing as if you're traveling near a river, and the vest itself is cool and comfortable. The cooling effect can be restored by pouring additional water in between breaks. Coldwater makes a ginormous cold vest. It is recommended for those who ride at noon when the temperature is at its highest.

General comment: This vest will get you through the summer!

After using it for a day, you can see how it feels:

  • It's not ambient water. Use cold water to make it feel cooler!
  • You have to keep it close to your body so that the vaporizing heat action doesn't work. Choose the perfect size!
  • Not suitable for urban areas where there is a lot of waiting at traffic lights.
  • It feels too cold to cool down when you go into tunnels, etc.

These four were the most impressive. Especially when it comes to size, if you don't buy a size that will stick to your body, the heat of vaporization won't be effective at all, so you may want to try it on once or choose a smaller size than you usually wear. MACNA also offers a size chart, so I highly recommend you check your size before you buy!

The Cooling Vest Evo I used this time. Personally, I think it's a good buy. Riding in the hot sun also carries the risk of heatstroke, so if you can avoid heatstroke, there's no reason not to buy one.
