Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. has officially agreed to renew its contract with Valentino Rossi for one year through 2021. With the full support of Yamaha Motor, Valentino Rossi will compete in the 2021 MotoGP World Championship as a Yamaha factory rider for the "PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team".
From the following press release
This year marks Rossi's 15th season as a Yamaha factory rider and he has won four world titles, 142 podiums, 56 victories, and 250 races. The Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP Team would like to express its gratitude to Rossi for his contribution to the team and will provide full support for the remaining races in 2020, aiming for the triple crown of world championship titles for rider, constructor, and team.
I am very happy to be able to continue riding for PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team in 2021. I have thought a lot before making this decision, to be at the top in MotoGP you have to work hard, train every day and live the life of an athlete, but I like it and I still want to ride. When I talked to Yamaha earlier this year, they told me that even though I am not a factory team, I am guaranteed a factory bike and factory support. I am also very happy to be moving to the PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team. They are a young team but they are very serious, very well organized and show that they are a top team. We also changed crew chiefs this year and they are doing a great job and I think they will get even better. I really like the atmosphere of the team and that's one of the reasons why I decided to continue. I am happy to have Morbidelli as my teammate, he is an academy rider and I hope we can work together and get a good result.
Lin Jarvis (Managing Director, Yamaha Motor Racing)
We are delighted that Rossi will remain in MotoGP. This will be his last season with the Yamaha factory team and his 25th season in the World Championship and his 15th with Yamaha. We initially promised him that we would fully support him and provide him with a factory-spec YZR-M1 if he stayed in MotoGP for 2021, and that was ultimately the deciding factor for him. I have said before that the MotoGP season, affected by the new coronavirus infection, was not the right time for the legendary rider to end his career, but it is great that he has decided to continue for at least one more season. I would like to thank the PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team for their enthusiasm and help in bringing Rossi to the team and I hope that next year the fans will be able to come back to the track and see some great performances. We are a young team but very professional, we are fighting for the championship and we are at the top of the standings, so I am confident that Rossi will feel at ease and be able to give his best performance.
