LCR Honda IDEMITSU's Takaaki Nakagami took the chequered flag in 7th place at the MotoGP Round 9 Catalunya GP held on Sunday, September 27.
Takaaki Nakagami finishes 7th in a race to catch up
He was 11th on the opening lap as per the grid and was passed by Miguel Oliveira (KTM) on lap three, dropping him back to 12th, but he led a battle for 12th that swelled to around five riders.
In the middle of the race, he improved his pace from 1'41" to 1'40" and formed a group to fight for 6th place with Francesco Bagnia (Ducati) and Danilo Petrucci (Ducati), closing the gap to Jack Miller (Ducati) who was on position 5, and also to Franco Morbidelli (Yamaha) in 4th place, who had slowed down from the top group. In the end, he passed Petrucci to take the chequered flag in 7th place, but in the final stages of the race, he was able to close in on Morbidelli and Miller who were in 4th place.
After two consecutive races at Misano in Italy and three consecutive weeks in Catalunya, the lack of a good grid position in qualifying has been a problem for him. A good start on the grid would have made a podium finish a realistic prospect, so a good grid position will be his first target for the next round in France, where he will be looking for his first podium finish.
