On May 18, 2021, the new YZF-R7, European name R7, was officially announced in the United States and Europe. As the mid-displacement model of Yamaha's supersport YZF series, it is sure to attract the support of a wide range of riders. In Japan, there has been no announcement of the new YZF-R7 yet, but the information is that the name of the motorcycle will be confirmed as YZF-R7, the release date will be at the end of the year, and the price will be around 1 million yen.

A large sport model for easy entry! This is the model we've been waiting for!

The new YZF-R7 that debuted this time is labeled "new" to distinguish it from the YZF-R7, a homologation model for racing that was released in 1999, but it is a completely different model from concept to content. The new R7 is not a model for a few race users, but a large version of "everyone's supersport" aimed at many riders.

The MT-07's 689cc in-line two-cylinder engine has a maximum output of 73. This is a modest 4ps. This is more than 50ps less than the 126ps output of Kawasaki's ZX-6R, a 636cc in-line four-cylinder engine in the same class. Despite this, the styling embodies the quality of the YZF-R series and is likely to win the support of a wide range of users.

The new Yamaha YZF-R7 looks so natural that it's hard to believe it's an MT-07 with a full cowl. The tail section looks just like the YZF-R6.

The MT-07 was the base for the new R7, with the same swingarm, link-type rear suspension, and frame as the new R7.

The engine is the same in-line 2-cylinder 689cc engine as the MT-07, but for the first time in the series, it features an assisted slipper clutch.

Adjustable upside-down forks with 41mm diameter and Brembo parts for enhanced braking

Even so, the new YZF-R7 is a member of the YZF-R series and has all the necessary equipment for sport riding. The frame of the new YZF-R7 is thought to be similar to that of the MT-07 from the shape of the rear section, but it uses inverted front forks, which are important for braking, and the front brake calipers are radial-mounted.

As a result, the front brake disc diameter has been increased from 286mm to 298mm, increasing the braking limit. The frame is based on the MT-07, but the aluminum center brace is rigidly mounted to improve torsional rigidity around the pivot, and the overall rigidity balance has also been adjusted.

Equipped with 41mm-diameter upside-down forks and 298mm-diameter double discs; the YZF-R6 had 43mm-diameter and 320mm-diameter forks

The front right side of the suspension is adjustable for tensile strength, the left side for compression damping, and the rear is also adjustable for tensile strength. The new R7 also features a radial Brembo master cylinder for the front brakes, as control of the brakes is important.

A quickshifter (for upshifting only) is also available as an option, so it's equipped for both street and serious sport driving.

The unique mono-eye headlights look like Zaku!

In terms of other equipment, the LED headlamps embedded in the M-shaped ducts of the YZR-M1 are unique. This is called a "bi-function LED headlamp" and is the same as the one used on the new MT-07. This new item makes it possible to switch between high and low with a single light, simplifying the installation of two lights like on the YZF-R1 and R6.

The left and right position lights and blinkers also use LEDs. The mono-eye Zaku face is sure to be popular!

In terms of styling, it has an upper cowl and tail cowl similar to those on the YZF-R6, but the parallel twin-cylinder engine makes it the slimmest model in the YZF-R series, slimmer than the R3 and R125, and the most aerodynamic model when a rider is on board.

The taillights are vertically positioned with ducts next to them, a feature shared with the R1 and R6.

In terms of specifications, the wheelbase of 1395mm is 5mm shorter than the MT-07, the vehicle weight has increased by only 4kg to 188kg, and the fuel tank capacity has been reduced by 1L from 14 to 13L. The tire size is the same as the MT-07, but the brand is Bridgestone S22, which enhances the sportiness.
