Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. has announced the release of a remodeled version of the "NMAX ABS," a two-motorcycle scooter equipped with a liquid-cooled 124cm3 "BLUE CORE*" engine in a compact body, as a 2021 model on June 28.
The main features are: 1) an exclusive smartphone application that enables incoming call notifications and fuel consumption management, the first of its kind for a Yamaha model in Japan; 2) a new "BLUE CORE" engine with traction control system that complies with 2020 emissions regulations; and 3) "Smart Motor Generator system" for quiet engine starting and restarting; 4) Idling stop system for low fuel consumption; 5) New frame that balances style and functionality and front and rear suspension for a comfortable ride; 6) Styling that expresses reliability and high quality.
The NMAX ABS inherits the DNA of the MAX series, popular in Europe and Japan, with its innovative styling and sporty performance packed into a compact body. The "NMAX ABS" is a city commuter designed to provide comfort for commuting and city riding.
The new model will be manufactured by Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM), a Yamaha Group company.
*BLUE CORE: Since 2014, Yamaha Motor has been promoting the concept of "BLUE CORE" as an engine design concept that realizes both "driving pleasure" and "fuel efficiency and environmental performance" at a high level. This model can be paired with a smartphone that has downloaded "YAMAHA Motorcycle Connect (abbreviated Y-Connect)". Pairing enhances the following functions.
(1) Addition of meter display items on the vehicle side, such as incoming phone calls and e-mails, and remaining battery life of smartphones
(2) Engine speed display on a smartphone screen
(3) Notice of Recommended Maintenance Period for Oil and Battery
(4) Monitoring fuel consumption and other driving conditions

2) Traction control system adopted.New "BLUE CORE" engine that complies with the 2020 emission regulations
The engine complies with the 2020 emissions regulations by optimizing the intake and exhaust system specifications and the fuel injection settings. A new traction control system is also available for smooth starting and driving on wet, unpaved roads. The traction control system can be switched on or off depending on the situation and personal preference. If the system detects any signs of the rear wheels idling when starting or driving, it controls the ignition timing and fuel injection in an integrated manner to support smooth starting and driving performance. Lightweight forged pistons, VVA (variable valve actuation), DiASil cylinders for better heat dissipation and offset cylinders for reduced loss are also retained.

The camshafts (intake side) are switched at 6,000 r/min between low speed and medium speed. The two camshafts complement each other in the torque curve, contributing to linear acceleration characteristics and a good acceleration feel throughout the range. Thanks to the optimized settings of the intake and exhaust systems, as well as the FI settings, the changeover is smooth and unpredictable.
3) Smart Motor Generator system for quiet engine starting and restarting
The "Smart Motor Generator," which combines the functions of an engine starting motor and a generator into a single unit, has been adopted for the first time on a Yamaha model in Japan. It works as a generator when riding and as a motor when starting and restarting the engine. When starting the engine, the crankshaft is rotated directly without the need for a starter clutch, so there is no "squeal" sound when the engine is started, making it quieter than conventional engines.
(4) "Idling stop system" contributes to low fuel consumption
This is the first time a Yamaha moped model in Japan has been equipped with the "idling stop system," which automatically stops idling when stopped at a traffic light to reduce fuel consumption, and quietly restarts the engine when the motorcycle is ready to start again. When the engine is restarted after idling is stopped, turning the throttle grip instantly starts the engine for a smooth start. The system can be turned on or off.
5) New frame that balances style and functionality and front and rear suspension that supports a comfortable ride
Newly designed frame that balances style with riding performance and practical functions. It has been matured and evolved as a platform for sports scooters, and the main pipe (60.5 mm diameter), down tube (45 mm diameter), and reinforcement (1. The combination of the two components (6 mm thick) achieves handling and ground feel that is not too light and has the right amount of feel. In addition, the engine suspension layout has been optimized to reduce vibration in all areas.
In addition, the front and rear suspensions have been optimally set. The rear suspension in particular has undergone repeated sensory evaluations in actual driving to achieve the best balance of spring constant and damping force, and a new structure with two-stage initial adjustment has also been added. Also, new lightweight cast wheels have been adopted for both front and rear.

Based on the design concept of "Prestige Confidence," the styling points were designed to express comfort and reliability that can be understood at a glance even by first-time scooter riders, as well as a sense of superiority as if riding in business class.
The spacious living space, high storage capacity and the fearless look of the LEDs combine everyday usability with an appearance to be proud of. From the front area to the seat, the silhouette embraces the rider with a sense of security. In addition, the strong and tight boomerang image of the side panels that run through the front and rear axles, a feature of the MAX series, expresses a sense of reliability.
