On October 12, 2016, YAMAHA Motor Corporation held the 7th YAMAHA World Technician Grand Prix 2016, in which 21 YAMAHA motorcycle technicians (dealer and distributor mechanics) selected from 21 countries and regions around the world gathered together and competed over their skills.

Ryohei Samejima of YSP Kawasaki-Chuo, Japan had won the Sports Model Class, and Jignesh Girishkumar Rana of PLANET AUTOMOBILES, India had won the Commuter Model Class. It had been the first time in 13 years (ever since the second contest in 2003) for a Japanese technician to win this competition.

The competition is divided between the "Sports Model Class" and the "Commuter Model Class." In both classes, the contestants compete in their customer service skills in three test areas: "basic service skills" in which the accuracy of their basic service skills like tire replacement are tested, "troubleshooting" in which their trouble shooting ability and repairing skills are checked, and "customer relations skills" in which their communication ability like explaining the repair contents are tested. The winners are decided on the basis of their total points in these test areas.

Under Yamaha's "One-to-One Service" motto (expressing the ideal of using professional service skills to create and strengthen the bonds with each and every customer), Yamaha Motor has been operating its unique Yamaha Technical Academy (YTA) training program for service technicians since 2000, based on the world-unified Yamaha-exclusive standards to offer the same high quality service at all Yamaha dealers in the world.

As of October 2016, approximately 33,000 technicians at 46 bases around the world have been certified as their official technicians and are serving on the front line.
