Many riders have been waiting to see when the YZF-R9, which has been rumored for some time, will be released.
It is expected to debut as a 2025 model after the launch of the new MT-09.

Engine complies with Euro 5+ (plus) emission regulations
The YZF-R9 is a super sports model based on the MT-09 with a parallel 3-cylinder engine and is expected to follow the previous MT-07-based YZF-R7 model. This is expected to debut as a 2025 model, as we have often discussed in Webike Plus.
In past articles, we have forecasted it as a 2023 or 2024 model, and the reason for the later delay is that the MT-09 model change and the XSR900GP were prioritized. The base new MT-09 is compliant with Euro 5+ emission regulations, and the situation is now set for the debut of the YZF-R9.
In addition, the new MT-09 is equipped with a 5-inch TFT color display that can display navigation applications. The switch box also features cross switches and auto-cancel indicator lights for improved convenience, and like the XSR900GP, these features will be carried over to the YZF-R9.
The previous YZF-R7 model, based on the MT-07, was largely devoid of electronic control, but the MT-09, by contrast, is a full-fledged model that even incorporates slide control with an attitude angle sensor. With a maximum output of 119 PS, the MT-09-based YZF-R9 is likely to be supported as an alternative to the conventional YZF-R6.
Expect YZF-R9's unique equipment in addition to the well-equipped MT-09
The MT-09 has also updated its electronic controls to match the engine, whose displacement has been increased by 43cc from the previous 845cc to 888cc for the 2021 model year. For the first time in the MT-09, an attitude angle sensor (IMU) is employed to detect the bike's movement and utilize it for traction/slide control and brake control.
The frame achieves a minimum wall thickness of 1.7mm using CF aluminum die-casting technology, which reduces weight by 2.7kg while increasing rigidity. Also, the rim section of the wheels was reworked to reduce the minimum thickness from 3mm to 2mm, resulting in a 700g weight reduction at the front and rear. By reducing the moment of inertia of the rotating parts by 11%, more nimble handling was achieved.
The 2024 model not only incorporates electronic equipment for added convenience and an engine that complies with emission regulations but also a vertical Brembo master cylinder and a third-generation quick-shifter. The YZF-R9 is also expected to feature special equipment unique to the Supersport.
