Carburetor Motorcycle Idling Irregularities may be due to Internal Contamination. Let’s Disassemble it and Soak it in Cleaner.

Soaking-type cleaner slowly dissolves persistent stains

Yamalube Super Carburetor Cleaner (undiluted type) from Wise Gear.
The carburetor is soaked in a mixture made at a ratio of 70 fuel: 30 cleaner to dissolve dirt. Compared to spray chemicals, this cleaner can stay in contact with dirt longer and remove it more effectively. However, it cannot be used on rubber or resin, so the carburetor must be completely disassembled.
For carburetors like the Keihin FCR, which use rubber gaskets in the non-disassembled parts, the key is how to procure the parts.

d06

The body is soaked in cleaner after all rubber and plastic parts are removed. disassembling a 4 carburetor is time-consuming, but by removing rubber parts such as the starter plunger and air cut valve, the effect on rubber parts can be avoided and the passageways closed by these parts can be opened, which improves the cleaning effect. The passageway closed by these parts is opened, allowing the cleaner to pass through and improving the cleaning effect.

d07

Just soak the dirty body for about an hour, as shown on the right. If you plan to assemble it immediately and pass fuel through it, there is no problem. If you do not plan to use it for a while after assembly, rinse the inside of all passages, including the air jet, with parts cleaner and blow it out with air blowers.

For cleaning parts that come off the carburetor body, such as jets and needles, it is easy and good to use a foam-type carburetor cleaner, as described below. However, inside the body, a handy spray may not be sufficient. Spray chemicals use the internal pressure of the can to inject the cleaner, but it does not always stay in the heavily soiled areas, and it may run off.
For this reason, a liquid-type cleaner is recommended for cleaning the entire body.
Among them, Wise Gear's Super Carburetor Cleaner, as the product name suggests, is specialized for carburetor dirt and effectively dissolves dirt stuck in the fuel and air passages. Another advantage of this product is that it keeps in contact with dirt for a longer period of time than spray chemicals because the carburetor is soaked in a solution diluted with fuel.
When a carburetor that is dirty with carbon or varnish is partially soaked in the cleaner, the luster of the metal material itself is easily restored without having to scrub the cleaned area with a brush or fingers. Although it is not possible to visually check the cleaning condition inside the body directly, there are many cases where air that could not pass through by air blowing before cleaning opens up after soaking in the cleaner, which has earned the trust of motorcycle stores.
However, this cleaner cannot be used with rubber or plastic parts such as O-rings, diaphragms, or floats. For 4-cylinder carburetors, it is necessary to remove all parts that can be removed from the carburetor body, as well as the jets and throttle valves, because there is a risk of damaging the fuel joints and vent pipe O-rings as well.
If you have a four-carburetor carburetor that has been disconnected, you will need to purchase parts because it will require a vacuum gauge to make tuning adjustments after assembly, and moreover, it is safer to replace aged rubber parts with new ones while they are being removed.
Nevertheless, if you want to perform a thorough cleaning to remove dirt and clogging, Super Carburetor Cleaner is the strongest chemical available.

Foam-type carburetor cleaner is effective for jet and needle contamination

d09

This foam-type super carburetor cleaner can be used to remove and clean jets and needles, or it can be sprayed from the air cleaner box while the carburetor is mounted on the car body.

d10

When cleaning small parts such as jets and needles, spraying inside a zippered plastic bag allows the cleaner to be spread evenly and reduces waste.

d11

The difference between before and after cleaning is obvious by looking at the gloss of the jets. The side holes of the pilot jet and main jet holders are called bleed holes and are important areas where air from the slow air jets and main air jets mix with fuel. If they are clogged due to long-term neglect, it is important to ensure that this part is also opened.

Super Carburetor ab Cleaner can also be used to clean jets and needles removed from the carburetor body. If you are cleaning the body at the same time, just soak it in the cleaner solution and it should be sparkling clean in an hour or two. However, if making dilute solutions just for small jets and needles is too much trouble, an easy spray-type carburetor cleaner that cleans with a firmer, richer foam is a good choice. By placing the jets in a zippered plastic bag used for organizing parts, etc., and then spraying the foam spray into the bag and closing the mouth, a minimal amount of cleaner can be used to clean without spilling any. Some carburetor malfunctions are caused by physical causes, such as worn throttle valves or distorted bodies. But far more often, it is due to internal contamination. And since the pilot system is always affected first before the main system when contamination occurs, the malfunction is more likely to occur at idle or in areas where throttle opening is low.
Do not give up and think that because it is an out-of-print car, or because it is an old car, the gunkiness in the low-speed, low-opening range is inevitable. Remove the carburetor from the car body, observe it, and if the dirt is noticeable, disassemble it as much as possible and clean it thoroughly.

POINT

Point 1 - The reason why carburetor malfunctions due to long-term neglect or lack of maintenance are often caused by the slow system is that the passageway diameter is smaller than that of the main system and easily clogged with dirt.

Point 2 - For persistent dirt, soaking-type carburetor cleaner is better than spray-type carburetor cleaner.
