DIY! How to Oil Change and Oil Filter Replacement for the New KATANA GSX-S1000 Series

OILKATANA

The GSX-S1000 has a liquid-cooled 4-cylinder engine inherited from the GSX-R1000, equipped on a street fighter design motorcycle. The up handlebar position is comfortable in the city and touring, and when opening the throttle widely, an engine that generates a maximum output of 109kw at 10,000rpm demonstrates its true potential. You should change the engine oil every 6000km distance and replace the oil filter every 18,000km distance to enjoy the high-performance engine in excellent condition.

1. Engine oil management is important because it is a high-revving and high-output engine.

The engine of the GSX-S1000 and the new KATANA, based on the GSX-R1000 (K5 / K6), which has a smaller bore and a longer stroke than the current GSX-R1000, features a setting that emphasizes the strength in the practical range.

Regardless of engine displacement and category, engine oil is extremely important among all engine parts and plays an active role such as lubrication, cooling, sealing, and rust prevention.

The role of engine oil;

The role of engine oil
Lubrication Smooth movement of metal in the engine
Sealing Keep the engine sealed
Cooling Absorption and cooling of generated heat
Cleaning Remove the dirt adhering to the inside of the engine
*The reason why there is no used oil
Rust Prevention  Prevents rust by forming an oil film inside the engine

While many parts working inside an engine, such as a piston, camshaft, and valve, engine oil can be also described as one of the engine parts. Especially for high-performance engines that generate high output, oil film performance should be maintained even in areas with high engine rotation speed.

The SUZUKI GSX-S1000 introduced here is based on the engine super sports model GSX-R1000 (K5 / K6), and is equipped with tuning for city riding and touring.

However, the engine speed when generating the highest output of 109kw is 10000rpm and the high-revving type is the GSX-R1000, and there is no doubt that the management of the oil is important.
According to the instruction manual, the engine oil requires to be changed every month or 1000km for the first time, and every 6000km or every year thereafter. In addition, the oil filter requires to be replaced every month or 1000km for the first time, and every 18000km thereafter.

Although it is a high-performance engine that rotates up to 10000rpm in the 1000cc, the cooling system is liquid-cooled with excellent temperature control, and since the fuel supply adopts the fuel injection system, the piston clearance fluctuation during cold and warm is lesser compared to the big motorcycle with an air-cooled carburetor era. Therefore, oil contamination by blow-by gas can be controlled to some extent.

Even so, the oil deterioration fluctuates depending on the riding methods such as starting the engine in the cold, riding a lot of short rides, and riding on heavy traffic in summer when the oil temperature tends to be high. It is true for the user’s mentality that replacing the engine oil at a shorter time than the specified distance for a given situation creates a sense of security in which the engine will continue to perform well for longer engine performance.

2. The attached drain bolt facing forward and turning sideways to the oil pan are common to the new KATANA.

Due to the oil pan's V-shaped cross-section, the drain bolt is attached facing forward.

Since the drain bolt is located at the bottom part of the oil pan, the old engine oil can be securely discharged without any oil residue on the engine. The waste oil collecting pan is placed well ahead of the drain bolt.

It is up to you whether you want to change the engine oil at 6000km or shorter distances as per the instruction given in the manual, but the first thing to do when performing an oil change is to extract the old oil. While the oil drain bolt is set at the lowest position in the engine, the GSX-S1000’s drain bolt is attached sideways to the front of the oil pan.

It seems to be the result of competing layouts to secure the oil pumping capacity while achieving a deep bank angle and to place a large OEM exhaust system but in fact, this facing forward drain bolt is the same as the new KATANA. In the first place, it is natural to say that of course because the new KATANA is based on the GSX-S1000.

The best way to drain the engine oil is when the engine is warm and the oil viscosity reduced, but since the oil temperature may have risen to nearly 90°C, it is better to wait for a while and do the work.

When using the box end wrench on the drain bolt, the risk of stripping the bolt head is certainly low as the bolt is more visible in turning sideways rather than downwards. However, instead of using a tool such as a spanner or adjustable wrench that only contacts 2 sides with the bolt, use a box end wrench or a socket wrench.

When removing the facing forward drain bolt at sideways, of course, the oil is discharged forward, so it is important that the waste oil collecting pan is set forward beneath the engine.

The GSX-S1000 with a V-shaped bottom of the oil pan has better oil discharge than engines with a flat oil pan, and even if the motorcycle body is tilted to the left or right, and swing back and forth with the drain bolt removed, the amount of additional discharge seems to be quite small.

You don’t want to keep the old oil as much as possible when changing oil, and that point is quite excellent.

3. The attachment and detachment of oil filter is perform using an exclusive “cap type” oil filter wrench.

Remove the cooling water reservoir tank on the right side of the engine together with the under cowl to remove the oil filter while avoiding interference with the exhaust pipe.

Position the

Position the “cap type” oil filter wrench on the oil filter and loosen the filter with a box end wrench. When the resistance disappears while the O-ring is in close contact, removed the filter by rotating it lightly by hand.

The oil that has accumulated inside from both the engine and the oil filter drips down to the assembly part of exhaust system. Since you have to spray the smeared oil by parts cleaner, please prepare a waste cloth in advance to wipe out the oil from the exhaust system.

The cartridge type oil filter mounted on the front side of the crankcase is designated to be replaced once every 3 times of changing the engine oil. At the bottom of the oil filter, there is a cylindrical part separately from the filter, which is a water-cooled oil cooler often found in high-performance engines.

The coolant that cools the engine flows inside the cylinder, and the oil temperature is controlled by contacting the engine oil through the heat exchanger.

Use a metal tool called “cap type” oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter. Since the clearance between the “cap type” filter wrench and the exhaust pipe is reduced when you cover it, it would be good to rotate the oil filter from the engine side with a box end wrench.

As the residue of oil drips down and smeared in the exhaust system when removing the oil filter, placing a waste cloth in advance keeps the exhaust system clean. When installing the oil filter, apply a thin coat of engine oil or grease to the O-ring so that the rubber does not bite and twist on the contact surface with the liquid-cooled oil filter, and an appropriate tightening torque can be obtained by sliding on the contact surface.

4. Too little or too much oil can damage the engine.

Do not immediately add the prescribed amount of engine oil, but check it out through the engine oil inspection window after filling the engine oil to some extent, and add if the amount is insufficient.

Please note that the amount of oil required differs when changing the engine oil alone and in case of changing the engine oil and oil filter at the same time.

According to the instruction manual, it is 2.8 liters when changing the engine oil and 3.4 liters when replacing the oil filter, and it is certainly stamped with 2800 ml beside the inspection window on the right side of the crankcase. As mentioned earlier, the oil pan of the GSX-S1000 has little residual oil, but there may still be some oil left inside the engine.

Of course, it is better to judge by the oil level of the inspection window, although it seems that the requirement at the time of replacement is the capacity with the expectation of the residual amount. In order to do this, instead of filling in all of the prescribed capacity from the beginning, position the motorcycle upright at the level of filling the 2.6 liters out of 2.8 liters and check the oil level that appears in the inspection window.

Since normal oil temperature has a high viscosity, it may not show the correct oil level immediately after filling the oil, so wait for a while and check.

In case of removing the oil filter, it is also effective to start the engine once after adding 3.3 liters out of 3.4 liters and let the oil circulate through the new filter. Check the inspection window slightly less than the specified amount, and make fine adjustments to make sure that the engine oil level falls between lower L line (lower level) and upper F line (upper level).

If you are concern about the shortage of oil film at this time when reaching the upper level, it will only make it easier to blow oil mist from the crankcase breather, or it will cause the crankcase internal pressure to rise, so it is sufficient to have it above the lower level. Be cautious as the engine oil leaks, excess and shortage can cause major troubles, but the work itself is not so difficult, so if you are a motorcycle user who wants to do it by yourself, we recommend that you try once.

The effect of an oil change is noticeable. Since it is a high-performance model, you may want to perform a regular maintenance.

Changing engine oil is essential for all motorcycles. Check and replace regularly for a smooth ride and protection of engine’s internal parts.
