Amazing Transformation: FUNNY’S CUSTOM SERVICE launches a conversion kit to turn XSR900 into an FZ750!

 8 min read

On October 18, at Sportsland SUGO in Miyagi Prefecture during the My Yamaha Motorcycle Day 2025, we came across a kit that transforms the current XSR900 into the legendary FZ750! We immediately spoke with Funny’s Custom Service, the developer and seller behind this project.

Two options: Front fairing only or full body kit

Known for Yamaha XSR parts like kits that give previous-generation XSR900s an early RZ look, Funny’s Custom Service is back with a new project. As the name suggests, the XSR900FZ exterior kit transforms the current XSR900 into a tribute to Yamaha’s classic FZ750.

There are two product options. First is the front fairing-only kit, which includes four pieces: the cowl, windshield, headlight cover, and cowl brackets. It comes pre-painted in XSR900’s stock colors. Even with just this kit, the bike gets a significant visual transformation.

XSR900FZ Front Fairing Kit

■The front fairing kit is sold pre-painted in stock colors. At the event, two bikes were displayed: the black color from the 2022–2023 range (left) and the Marlboro-style white from 2024. A black-and-gold “Midnight Special” version for the 2025 model is also planned.

■The headlight remains the XSR900 stock unit, offset to the left within the cowl. A small PIAA auxiliary lamp fits on the right side as an option.

■Handlebars and the instrument cluster are stock XSR900. Unlike the XSR900 GP with clip-ons, the upright handlebars provide a comfortable riding position, letting you enjoy a “cowl-equipped XSR.”

■A blue GAULOISES color version, originally used when the current XSR900 launched, is also available.

XSR900FZ Complete Kit

In addition to the fairing kit, Funny’s offers a complete version that includes their original fuel tank cover, plus a new stock front fender and side covers painted in FZ750 colors.

■The full kit consists of the fairing, tank cover, and pre-painted stock front fender and side covers. The displayed bike also had a Funny’s single-seat cover and a short rear fender installed.

■While the bike photographed uses the original 1985 FZ750 color, any color can be applied to match customer requests.

■The photographed bike’s handlebars were swapped for lower bars, and mirrors were mounted to the cowl, enhancing the FZ feel.

■Notice the angle of the rear end of the tank cover.

The tank cover reflects Funny’s attention to detail, with the rear edge raised to recreate the angular FZ-style silhouette. Modern bikes usually slope this section for safety, but many ’80s models had it sharply upright.

The front cowl traces the FZ750’s headlight area, but most other parts are custom-shaped for the XSR900. Funny’s spent a year testing this cowl on the road. The thick FRP ensures minimal wobble at high speeds and excellent wind protection, so it’s practical as well as stylish.

With the cowl installed, the bike looks larger than the naked XSR900, giving it a more premium presence. Prospective XSR buyers now face a fun dilemma: choose the stock cowl-equipped XSR900 GP to channel a 2-stroke racer vibe, or enjoy bold upright-bar riding with Funny’s FZ kit—more options than ever!

■The rear edge of the tank is angled closer to vertical, pursuing that unmistakable FZ feel. Compare it with the fairing-kit bike (with the XSR’s stock tank) shown at the beginning of the article.

■Only the headlight cover area follows the FZ750; the rest of the design is nearly entirely original. The photographed bike uses an aftermarket Harley headlight, which can be accommodated upon request.

■The Yamaha FZ750, launched in 1985, tilted the cylinders forward, adopted downdraft intake, and implemented 5-valve heads—laying the technical foundation for later Yamaha four-cylinder bikes.

Not a Café Racer, But a Café au Lait Racer?!

Another XSR900 on display from Funny’s is a rocket-cowl version whose design was inspired by the Japan-exclusive ivory color. Unlike the XSR900FZ, this bike is still a prototype. Combined with a K&H single seat (also a prototype), it gives off the vibe of an ultra-stylish café racer. With the body color in mind, it’s cheekily named “XSR900 Café au Lait Concept."

■This rocket-cowl version was built to reflect the 2025 model’s Japan-exclusive ivory color (orders ended September 30). While it clearly shows the builder’s skill and sense of style, it also highlights just how versatile the XSR900 is.
