A Classic machine with dedication to excellence: Z1000MkII Custom
SANCTUARY's Z1000MkII
The air-cooled Z-series models, which still attract many fans, have all been in production for over 40 years. Even Sanctuary, which has produced numerous complete machines called RCM based on the air-cooled Z-series models, has faced increasingly strict inventory conditions over the past 1-2 years, resulting in steadily rising motorcycle prices that have become difficult to afford. Nevertheless, even in this situation, enthusiasts who are truly passionate about these motorcycles are still placing orders, regardless of the high price. This motorcycle is a uncompromising finish that embodies the owner's commitment towards the lofty goal of "providing modern riding performance to the former flagship models."
In this machine, an Ohlins front fork with a clear anodized outer tube, brought in by the owner, was used as an exception to reflect the owner's obsession with the product. Additionally, it was necessary to equip the Z1000MkⅡ with modern performance, such as high-grip radial tires of 17 inches in the front and rear, which incorporate the latest and highest-level technology in the modern sports scene. To withstand these changes, the frame was reinforced, and SCULPTURE brackets and a swingarm were introduced to optimize the changes in the riding posture. Furthermore, Ohlins rear shock absorbers and OZ Racing aluminum forged wheels were installed, and high-end brake parts, such as Brembo calipers and Sunstar brake discs, were generously incorporated to enable free control of the bike even at high speeds. The machine, completed in this way, emits a special presence aimed at the highest level through uncompromising craftsmanship.
Handle
SANCTUARY prioritizes a symmetrical layout inside the cockpit and aims for a simple layout as much as possible. The handle and handlebar end are Daytona's RCM concept.
The clutch and brake master cylinders are chosen from Brembo's RCS radial master cylinder. Although it is widely adopted in the custom scene, it has many advantages such as a reduced pulling force and excellent control due to the direct transmission of the touch feeling.
Engine
The engine has been big bored with a Φ71mm piston from Pistal Racing, increasing its displacement to 1045cc. Additionally, various upgrades have been incorporated to improve durability and safety. Especially noteworthy is the Nobreast high-pressure oil pump which contributes to stable oil temperatures compared to the standard gear type by adopting a trochoid-type pump.
Intake & Exhaust
The exhaust system is made of full titanium by Nitro Racing. Note that the welding marks on the exhaust pipes are due to the weldcraft method, which involves cutting the pipes in a ring and welding them back together.
Chassis
The unfamiliar Ohlins front forks are one that the owner brought in and had stripped of its original paint, then finished with a clear anodized coating. Generally, SANCTUARY does not accept customer-supplied parts due to uncertainty about their history and whether they can perform at an adequate level, but in this case, the owner's request was granted as an exception. This forks are combined with parts from the E×M package, which offers easily interchangeable parts such as the Nitro Racing front fender.
Nitro Racing's rearsets are popular for their simple design that suits any machine or rider's style. They have been chosen for this motorcycle with attention to smooth movement by incorporating bearings in the pivot. The master cylinders are positioned forward to accommodate the rear brake reservoir tank inside the side cowl.
Top-of-the-line brand parts are installed for the chassis to suit owner's needs, including Brembo 4-pot calipers, Sunstar's "RCM Concept" brake rotors, and O.Z. Racing forged aluminum wheels.
The Ohlins rear shock has been installed with a lay-down processing. Although this processing has been a standard procedure for a long time, it is a high-difficulty process that involves creating a new mounting section and welding the mounting symmetrically on both sides. At SANCTUARY, they use dedicated tools to perform this procedure.
The pivot section has a counterbore processing method that cannot be easily replicated with mediocre skills, ensuring a chain line that accommodates a 180-size tire. The SANCTUARY sprocket cover is capable of accommodating changes to a hydraulic type and removing the speedometer.
The Sculpture swingarm was developed to achieve the optimal pull-back angle and length for the 17-inch wheels of the air-cooled Z series. It has been customized with additional stabilizers and racing stand hooks to become a special edition. The chain adjuster is a specially ordered RCM-specific item.
The rear brake is actively used even in racing scenes today. It not only serves as deceleration, but also allows to change the riding posture. To achieve a higher degree of riding freedom, a small diameter brake rotor has been adopted to increase sensitivity, making the rear brake easier to use.
