From Prototype to Perfection: SUZUKI KATANA Custom by YOSHIMURA
YOSHIMURA's KATANA
At the 2019 Spring Tokyo Motorcycle Show, YOSHIMURA Japan displayed a custom of the new Suzuki KATANA ahead of other builders. At this point, the bike was only lightly customized, with an exhaust that would later be sold as the Titanium Slip-On B-77 Cyclone, and engine, radiator, and brake lever guards that were prototypes at the time. However, it was from then that rumors began to spread among the public, including expectations that a full carbon exterior was being developed and that it would be a limited edition model like the 1135R. In September of the same year, Suzuki Motorcycles hosted a KATANA event where YOSHIMURA presented the bike with a handlebar kit installed, which raised the expectations of YOSHIMURA and KATANA fans alike. Here we will introduce photos of the version clad in a carbon exterior that was presented as a prototype in early December 2019.
The above mentioned handlebar kit that attracted attention at the KATANA event could only be used with the carbon exterior (the stock exterior did not allow for enough turning angle), but an FRP exterior was developed at the same time, allowing the beautiful handlebar kit to be installed at a more reasonable price than with carbon. This KATANA is also equipped with an engine derived from the GSX-R1000, which YOSHIMURA has also raced with. They are well acquainted with the engine from intake to exhaust, and are very passionate about it. Here we will introduce some photos of YOSHIMURA's prototypes from 2019.
Handle
The handlebar kit in this photo is in the prototype stage. A PRO-GRESS meter can be placed in the center of the top bridge, which YOSHIMURA fans are sure to enjoy.
Bodyworks
The carbon exterior parts shown in this photo are all prototypes. The FRP version was also developed at the same time.
This front cowl is also a prototype. The Wind Armor NK, brake lever guard, and radiator core protector were already available for sale at the time of this photo shoot.
A Fender Eliminator Kit is also available to significantly change the look of the rear area.
Engine
The Engine Case Guard Kit Generator Cover on the left side and the Clutch Cover / Starter Gear Cover on the right side are from YOSHIMURA's PRO SHIELD line. The combination of aluminum cover and resin guard protects the engine area.
Intake & Exhaust
Along with the carbon exterior, the Titanium Slip-On B-77 Cyclone is a prominent feature of this YOSHIMURA KATANA. The unique shape of the aluminum silencer is the same design used on the GSX1000S racer in the 1980s. At that time, it was commonly known as a "banana" pipe. The product name "B-77" of the new exhaust for the KATANA comes from this nickname as "77" can be read "nana" in Japanese.
Chassis
The X-TREAD Step Kit for the KATANA was added to the lineup early on and was already on sale at the time of the photo shoot.
