Blue Before Its Time: SUZUKI KATANA Custom by yhana SPL.
yhana SPL.'s KATANA
One common method of customization is to incorporate the new colorings and specifications that come when the bike you own gets a model change. This KATANA custom by yhana has a 2020 M0 as its base. Thinking of the customization method we mentioned above, it may seem as though this M0 was modified to 2022 M2 specifications, but the owner says that it's actually the opposite, so we asked what he meant.
"I wanted to have a blue KATANA before I bought it," he says. "So when I purchased this bike, I took advantage of the shop's service and had it fully painted in Yamaha FZS Blue. This was well before the M2 model was announced. After I got the bike I attended a meet-up for owners of the new KATANA, and that's when I really got into customization. I thought gold would look good with the blue, so I replaced the outer tubes of the front forks with gold GSX-S1000F stock tubes, and my friends suggested that gold would look good on the wheels, so I put on gold GALE SPEED Type SB1 wheels. I was feeling quite pleased with the color balance, when around the fall of 2021, I heard that the KATANA was getting a model change to the M2. I looked at it and saw the blue body color with gold front forks and wheels, and thought, 'Oh, it's the same color as mine!' I was a bit shocked actually."
In other words, this bike was ahead of the times and had the M2 color scheme even before informaiton about the M2 was released to the public, which may be a rare example. The actual KATANA M2 is matte blue (Matte Stellar Blue Metallic), while this bike is a beautiful glossy blue color. The wheels on the M2 are also a bit more orange, while the wheels here are straight gold. These are just some of the points that distinguish them from each other, but this bike also has a variety of other upgrades. The exhaust system has been changed to titanium exhaust pipes and a banana silencer, the ECU was set up by Garage 414, the handlebars are by WestPower, which was chosen based on a fellow KATANA owner's bike, and the seat was custom-made for a better fit. Along with the aforementioned wheels, the brake system has also been updated including a new front master cylinder and rear caliper. Rather than saying that this M0 has been upgraded to an M2, you could say that it's an alternate version of the M2 that got it's colors ahead of time and has been enhanced in a slightly different way. Of course, it is also satisfying in the sense that it is not only unique but also that it was thought up by the owner himself.
Handle
The front master cylinder is a Brembo RCS, and the headlight shell, position light cover, tank side under cover, and other carbon-base parts are by A-TECH.
The handlebars use a WestPower Clip-on Handlebar Kit A with Ohlins Steering Damper, and the tank cover is also replaced with a painted WestPower cover.
Bodyworks
The carbon-like pattern leather around the perimeter of the seat is designed to match the closeby carbon parts, and the top uses high quality upholstery. This seat was order-made from NOGUCHI SEAT.
The KATANA/GSX-S1000S lettering on the A-TECH side covers was painted by JETWRENCH ArtStudio.
Engine
The 999cc straight-4 engine and aluminum twin-spar frame are KATANA M0 stock with AGRAS Racing Sliders on the sides and a Woolrich Racing Quickshifter installed. The exhaust system consists of K-FACTORY CLR-RG Exhaust Pipes and a YOSHIMURA B-77 Silencer. The intake was set up with a K&N filter by Garage 414.
Chassis
The step is a STRIKER SPECIAL STEP KIT, 6-position. The under cowl is made by A-TECH and the swingarm pivot caps are by YOSHIMURA for the GSX-S1000S/F/GT.
The front fork outer tubes are stock for the GSX-S1000F with the color changed to gold. The front brakes are stock Brembo calipers + SUNSTAR x UNICORN discs. The front fender is by SPEEDRA.
The rear brakes use a Brembo P2-RS84 caliper and SUNSTAR disc. A-TECH was also chosen for the carbon rear fender.
The rear shocks are Ohlins SU509. The wheels, also gold-colored like the front fork outer tubes, are GALE SPEED Type SB1 in 3.50-17/6.00-17 sizes.
