Subtle Sophistication: SUZUKI KATANA Custom by Hisashi
Hisashi's KATANA
Though "keep the stock look, but make solid modifications" is an established customization style, it is surprisingly difficult to achieve. However, this KATANA M0 seems to have cleared that hurdle. Perhaps it is the black body color and the parts selected to match it that make us think so. When we talked to the owner, Mr. Hisashi, who has been working on this bike himself, we could understand why the way it has been put together feels so right.
"The concept was as expected, to make a custom that feels like stock. The exterior color is actually a mix of black and red. The seat is a stock KATANA accessory, and the under cowl is a stock GSX-S1000. I chose parts that could be bolted on, and those that would provide a comfortable position for long distance riding. The overall look is intended to be low and slightly long," says Hisashi.
The radiator shroud from ACTIVE and the GT Tail Cowl Kit from OHNO-SPEED were installed early on to achieve this look. The volume around the front and the long tail created by these two parts give the impression of a sleeker, more evolved air-cooled KATANA. The red color that emerges from the black when viewed up close also matches well with the Brembo calipers whose logos have been changed from the stock aluminum base to red, the two-tone seat, and the under cowl (the way the red and black are divided is the same as the first-generation GSX-S1000 stock paint scheme).
The WEST POWER clip-on handlebars and top bridge, which were selected for the ability to ride long distances in a fatigue-free position while maintaining a sense of unity with the bike, also contribute to the overall feel reminiscent of an air-cooled KATANA. The same goes for the matte black GALE SPEED Type SB1 wheels, which also enhance functionality. The color scheme and parts are all carefully selected to fit the overall concept. The appearance, which looks like stock but has been meticulously modified, will never grow old. The theme has been so well carried out that it will even look good with a rear bag mounted for a long trip.
Handle
The clip-on handlebars and top bridge are made by WEST POWER. The tank cover is also WEST POWER in order to prevent interference with the clip-on handlebar kit. The exterior is painted in the Toyota Vellfire 222 stock color, with red coloring hidden within the black to create a luxurious feel.
Bodyworks
The windshield and bracket is a YOSHIMURA Wind Armor, which extends farther upward than the stock windshield and enhances the sleek look. The front master cylinder is a Brembo RCS Corsa Corta.
The tail cowl is a GT Tail Cowl from OHNO-SPEED which is longer than stock to create more interior space. The red and black two-tone seat is a stock KATANA accessory. The ACTIVE LED License Plate Side Turn Signals add to the low, long, and modern look.
Engine
The engine and FI are KATANA stock, and the air cleaner is changed to K&N. The titanium Cyclone exhaust system, left and right engine guards, and radiator core guard are YOSHIMURA. The ACTIVE Radiator Shrouds with Front Turn Signals complete the look.
Chassis
The steps are equipped with a STRIKER 6 Position Special Step Kit. YOSHIMURA frame caps have been added to the stock frame and an RK 525XXW Drive Chain was chosen for the chain.
The internal springs in the front forks have been changed to Hyper Pro springs, and the front brakes are a combination of SUNSTAR Premium Racing Discs and stock Brembo calipers with red logos.
The rear brakes are also a combination of a Brembo 2-piston caliper and SUNSTAR Premium Racing Disc, and the red Brembo logo was chosen to match the front.
The rear shocks were also changed to Hyper Pro, with a tank type with hose, and matte black GALE SPEED Type SB1 wheels in 3.50-17/6.00-17 sizes, the same as stock, were selected. The tires are Bridgestone T32 in 120/70ZR17 and 190/50ZR17 sizes. The rear fender is by Magical Racing.
